Benson (TV series)
Benson is an American television sitcom which aired from September 13, 1979, to April 19, 1986, on ABC. The series was a spin-off from the soap opera parody Soap, in which the character Benson, portrayed by Robert Guillaume, had first appeared as the wise-cracking yet level-headed African-American butler for the highly dysfunctional Tate family. However, Benson eschewed the soap opera format of its parent show for a more conventional sitcom structure. The series was created by Susan Harris, and produced by Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions.

Plot: In the first movie of the series, we are introduced to the kindly Dr. Christian (Hersholt), who runs the small clinic in the town of River's End. With the town growing, Dr. Christian petitions the mayor for money to build a new hospital. But the mayor believes the good Doctor is too old-fashioned, and wants to replace the doctor with a more "modern" medicine man, along with commissioning a new highway to be built through the town. When the mayor's young daughter is injured in an accident, Dr. Christian is able to perform extremely delicate surgery without having the correct medical instruments. The town counsil is so impressed with Dr. Christian that they not only allow him to keep his job, but have been convinced to build the new hospital.

Benson
In this spinoff of "Soap", Benson DuBois is sent out West to serve as butler to widowed state governor Gene Gatling, an honest but bumbling servant of the people. Although he has his rivals in German maid Kraus and persnickety aides Clayton and Taylor, Benson, armed with an acerbic wit and plenty of smarts, becomes the Governor's close friend and helper, and eventually is elected Lieutenant Governor!

I've been after a copy of this episode since I first saw it in the 80s. While surfing around for it, I noticed that there are plenty of others who are touched by this clip - so here's an early Christmas present to all of them. I've made it the length it is to provide a build-up to everyone's favourite part - Robert Guillaume singing "O Holy Night" - still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Enjoy! It cost me money to obtain the episode, so do me a favour and throw a few coins into your favourite charity box if you like it. PS. I'm no lawyer, but I read somewhere that the Berne Act means there's no copyright issue - in case anyone was wondering :)
