John Ernest Joseph Bellocq (1873 – 1949) was an American professional photographer who worked in New Orleans during the early 20th century. Bellocq is remembered for his haunting photographs of the prostitutes of Storyville, New Orleans' legalized red light district. These have inspired novels, poems and films.
Bellocq was born into a wealthy white French Creole family in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He became known locally as an amateur photographer before setting himself up as a professional, making his living mostly by taking photographic records of landmarks and of ships and machinery for local companies. However, he also took personal photographs of the hidden side of local life, notably the opium dens in Chinatown and the prostitutes of Storyville. These were only known to a small number of his acquaintances. In the latter part of his life, he lived alone and acquired a reputation for eccentricity and unfriendliness. According to acquaintances from that period, he showed little interest in anything other than photography. In his early days, he had been something of a dandy.
New Orleans (/nuː ˈɔːrlɪnz/,/nuː ˈɔːrliənz/, /nuː ɔːrˈliːnz/, or /ˈnɔːrlənz/; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛlɔʁleɑ̃]) is a major United States port and the largest city and the center of the metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States. The New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,452,502.
The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in the United States.

Juan d'Arienzo (December 14, 1900 – January 14, 1976) was an Argentine tango musician, also known as "El Rey del Compás" (King of the Beat). He was son of Italian immigrants and used more modern arrangements and instrumentation; his popular group produced hundreds of recordings.
His music is played often at milongas in Buenos Aires, and the instrumentals are the classic harder rhythmic tangos with a strong staccato dance rhythm. He also recorded many great milongas and fast valses.
His recordings were accompanied by singers such as Alberto Echagüe, Armando Laborde, and Héctor Maure, among others.
Upon his death in 1976, his body was interred in the La Chacarita Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Unearthing what two New Orleans brothers—a priest and a photographer—did with their spare time. By Michael Pasquier, for Killing the Buddha.
Internationally acclaimed director Louis Malle has taken a taboo subject - child prostitution - and has created in Pretty Baby a film of humanity and beauty. E.J. Bellocq (Keith Carradine) is a photographer obsessed with the prostitutes in New Orleans' red-light district. Violet (12-year-old Brooke Shields), a young girl in 1917, bewitches Carradine with her curiosity and naive coquettishness. Malle's level-headed treatment of this controversial theme and exceptional performances by the entire cast (especially Susan Sarandon as Violet's prostitute mother) makes Pretty Baby a must-see for all serious film fans.

What do you think of Witkin's art? Do you find it amazing or do you find it a little too much? There are a few items I really enjoy here. I like the centaur. Alouette is a web-series by Jules Bartkowski and Dylan Pasture. The titles are based on the moody Storyville photography of E.J. Bellocq, which fit well with the dark transformation of the series’ lead character, Lark. Spooky stuff.

(Show More) Music: Augusto Pedro Berto Meaning: La Payanca - the name of a prostitute? Photo: E. J. Bellocq The story is told by Roberto Selles that the composer, a guitarist and Bandoneon player, adapted this as a tango from an old folklore tune around 1906. It was performed without a title for a long time and only finally published it in 1917. One version of the title is that it was suggested by a patron of the cabaret L'Abbaye situated at Esmeralda 500. Augusto Berto, the composer, is also reported to have told León Benarós that the idea for the title came to him when he saw some children trying to lasso some chickens a...

Natasha Trethewey, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, read poems from two of her collections, Bellocq's Ophelia and Native Guard, and explained the history of her poems. She discussed the research that she does to compose her poems and using the dictionary to explore meanings of words. Her advice to burgeoning poets was to "fall in love with sentences."

Other alumni include Vincent "The Chin" Gigante of the Genovese Crime Family and Paul "Big Paulie" Vario of Goodfellas fame. Rumor has it that Big Paul Vario is the one who crushed Jimmy Hoffa(already Dead) in a Cadillac at a wrecking yard and he later became a bumper or a hubcap the joke was. Hoffa was a good man but he hated Robert Kennedy.
