Islamic extremism

Islamic extremism has been defined as any form of Islam that opposes "democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs." Related terms include the ideology of Islamism (Political Islam), "radical Islam" and "Islamic supremacy".

Many oppose the use of term arguing it could "de-legitimize" the faith of Islam or suggest there is something wrong with some aspect of Islam.

Definition

A number of definitions have been offered for Islamic extremism, sometimes using overlapping but also distinct aspects of extreme interpretations and pursuits of Islamic ideology:

Stacey Dooley

Stacey Jaclyn Dooley (born 9 March 1987) is an English television presenter and journalist. She rose to fame in 2009 after appearing in a number of BBC Three documentaries highlighting child labour issues in developing countries.

Background and career

Dooley was born and grew up in Luton and once worked as a shop assistant.

Dooley first appeared on television as one of the participants on the documentary TV series Blood, Sweat and T-shirts. Dooley and the other participants were selected to illustrate the typical fashion-obsessed consumer. Thanks to her popularity on the show, partly because of her interest in third world labour laws, she was given her own show, Stacey Dooley Investigates, in August 2009. The two-part special was shown on BBC Three throughout August and September 2009. It also aired in Australia on ABC2 from 2 June 2010.

In October 2010, BBC Three aired two further programmes, the first on former child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the second on sex trafficking and underage sex slavery in Cambodia.

My Hometown

"My Hometown" is a single by Bruce Springsteen off his Born in the U.S.A. album, that was the record-tying seventh and last top 10 single to come from it, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It also topped the U.S. adult contemporary chart, making the song Springsteen's only #1 song on this chart to date. The song is a synthesizer-based, low-tempo number that features Springsteen on vocals.

Lyrics

The song’s lyrics begin with the speaker’s memories of his father instilling pride in the family’s hometown. While it first appears that the song will be a nostalgic look at the speaker’s childhood, the song then goes on to describe the racial violence and economic depression that the speaker witnessed as an adolescent and middle-aged man. The song concludes with the speaker’s reluctant proclamation that he plans to move his family out of the town, but not without first taking HIS son on a drive and expressing the same community pride that was instilled in him by his father.

Bury Park

Bury Park is located one mile north west of Luton town centre on the road to Dunstable. Since the mid-1970s a large Asian community have settled.

Bury Park has a large commercial area specialising in fruit, vegetables, and Asian clothing. There is a significant number of restaurants in the area, particularly serving Halal food. The main road through the area has recently undergone significant updating with new tree planting, improvements to the road layout, paving and street furniture.

Kenilworth Road, the home of Luton Town F.C. is also located here.

History

Bury Park takes its name from Bury Farm, which was situated near to where Kenilworth Road is now.

An estate was erected on the fields of the farm, and the first houses were occupied in 1882. Church school halls were opened in 1895, Bury Park United Reformed Church Church was built in 1903, and Luton Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd opened a general store at the junction of Dunstable Road and Leagrave Road in 1906. The Anglican church of All Saints was opened in 1907 and a new church built in 1923 in Shaftesbury Road. Before moving to the Kenilworth Road ground, Luton Town played their home games on a flat field that became the site of the Odeon cinema. Dunstable Road was lined with Victorian houses, each with a neatly fenced garden, but the character of the road altered with the coming of the trams in 1908; the houses were turned into shops, and their front gardens became paved forecourts. By 1926, the shops included a "High-Class Pastry Cook and Confectioner" at 273 Dunstable Road.
