London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
The City of London is a city and county within London. It constituted most of London from its settlement by the Romans in the 1st century AD to the Middle Ages, but the agglomeration has since grown far beyond the City's borders. The City is now only a tiny part of the metropolis of London, though it remains a notable part of central London. It is one of two districts of London to hold city status; the other is the adjacent City of Westminster.
The City of London is widely referred to simply as the City (often written as just City and differentiated from the phrase "the city of London" by capitalising City) and is also colloquially known as the Square Mile, as it is 1.12 sq mi (2.90 km2) in area. Both of these terms are also often used as metonyms for the United Kingdom's trading and financial services industries, which continue a notable history of being largely based in the City.
The name London is now ordinarily used for a far wider area than just the City. London often denotes the sprawling London metropolis, or the 32 London boroughs, in addition to the City of London itself. This wider usage of London is documented as far back as the 16th century.
The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.
The City may refer to:
A city is a large and permanent human settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town in general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.
Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process, but it also presents challenges to managing urban growth.
A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis. In terms of population, the largest city proper is Shanghai, while the fastest-growing is Dubai.
There is not enough evidence to assert what conditions gave rise to the first cities. Some theorists have speculated on what they consider suitable pre-conditions and basic mechanisms that might have been important driving forces.

The City of London is one of the oldest parts of the capitol, as it is located where London was first founded almost 2000 years ago. The City of London roughly constitutes the same area that was mostly unaltered until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Known as the "Square Mile", the City nowadays is roughly bounded by the River Thames to the south, Chancery Lane to the west, Charterhouse Street to the north, and the Tower of London to the east. Although the old City's gates are long gone, you can still see their location in the street names. Join us on this video tour as we explore the Tower of London, Leadenhall Market, the City's financial district, St. Paul's Cathedral and more! During the 1920s, cinematographer Claude Friese-Greene travelled across the UK with his new colour film camera. His trip ended in London, with some of his most stunning images, and these were recently revived and restored by the BFI, and shared across social media and video websites. Since February I have attempted to capture every one of his shots, standing in his footsteps, and using modern equivalents of his camera and lenses. This has been a personal study, that has revealed how little London has changed. www.mrsimonsmith.com There have been lots of enquiries about the music ... This video is a time lapse of London shot in RAW footage to bring out the beautiful colours you find around London at day and at night. The film was produced by myself and I was lucky to have such a great team of people to work with. Joe Gallon provided all the shots and visual editing, he shot it on a Canon 5D Mark 2, as well as a Canon 550D and used a range of filters and lenses. Matt Fletcher composed the beautiful piano piece that flows with the pace of the footage and gives it momentum. Isla Day read the lovely poem Emma Bennallick and I wrote just for this project. Isla's innocent voice gives extreme contrast to how the poem usually reads and to how London is usually perceived, which creates a whole new way of looking at London. I did all the sound design and the final mix of ...

The Tower of London To the east of the City you'll find the Tower of London b...

LONDON was shot in the U.K. while a small trip during the holidays. I wanted this short to be representative of London's diversity, culture and life.

LONDON GRAMMAR Greatest Hits - London Gramamar Collection
When I wake up in the sunlight
And look into your eyes
And I hold you for a little while
And I see behind your smile
I remember how beautiful
I used to think you are
Now the only love that meant something is gone
I should have let you go
When I saw that
It was over in your eyes
What do I have to do?
To get rid of you
I'll be better on my own
Now I miss the sun
But as long as I'm with you
It's just another rainy day in London
Ooh, just another rainy day in London
I still hold on to the memory
Of how we were meant to be
And I wonder did you ever care
You were never there for me
I thought I was stronger
But then why am I here
With nothing left to say
Now the only love that meant something is gone
I should have let you go
When I saw that
It was over in your eyes
What do I have to do?
To get rid of you
I'll be better on my own
Now I miss the sun
But as long as I'm with you
It's just another rainy day in London
Ohh, Just another rainy day in London
(Just another day, Just another day)
I remember how beautiful
I used to think you think you are
I should have let you go
When I saw that
It was over in your eyes
What do I have to do?
To get rid of you
I'll be better on my own
Now I miss the sun
But as long as I'm with you
It's just another rainy day in London
