News International becomes Legacy.com’s latest affiliate

Apr 28, 2008 - Legacy.com, which hosts online obituaries, memorials, and other family announcements for more than 650 U.S., Canadian and United Kingdom newspapers has attracted one of Europe’s leading newspapers and online brands as an affiliate.

Readers of the U.K.’s The Times, The Sunday Times and TimesOnline.co.UK may now access obituaries, memorials and other family announcements online via Legacy.com. They also are able to send messages or offer remembrances and condolences in guest books accompanying each announcement that Legacy.com hosts, and to take advantage of other services offered by the site.

“With many of the United States’ best and largest newspapers now affiliated with Legacy.com, we’ve expanded our capabilities to serve select international markets,” said Stopher Bartol, president and CEO of Legacy.com. “We’ve built a business that makes a difference in peoples’ lives while also helping newspapers better connect with their readers. We’re excited that an international newspaper and online brand the caliber of The Times, The Sunday Times and TimesOnline.co.UK recognize the value we provide to our newspaper affiliates in Europe, Canada and the United States.”

Long considered the newspaper of record in the U.K.’s crowded and fiercely competitive newspaper market, The Times and The Sunday Times were named the country’s leading daily newspapers for businesspeople by the independent British Business Survey (BBS) in its most recent triennial survey.

The newspapers’ parent, News International, has enormous worldwide reach. According to the most recent figures compiled by the World Association of Newspapers and online sources, The Sunday Times’ audited circulation is almost 1.15 million, the daily circulation of The Times is more than 615,000 and the worldwide audience of the TimesOnline.co.UK is 7.1 million.

The Times is the original “Times” newspaper, serving as a namesake for many other papers around the world, including Legacy.com’s largest U.S. affiliate, The New York Times. It was the originator of the Times Roman typeface, which remains one of the most popular fonts in print and digital communications.

About 160 daily and non-daily U.K. newspapers are currently Legacy.com affiliates.
