Alan Samuel Colmes was born Sept. 24, 1950, in New York City. While working toward his bachelor’s degree in communications at Hofstra University, he worked at the college’s radio station. After graduating in 1971, he worked at various U.S. radio stations in the Northeast.

He was hired at Fox in 1996.

Friends and colleagues shared their condolences on social media.

In a statement, Hannity said Colmes was "one of life's most decent, kind and wonderful people you'd ever want to meet."

"When Alan and I started 'Hannity & Colmes,' there wasn't a day that went by where we didn't say we were the two most fortunate men in all of television."

"So sad to hear of the death of Fox News colleague Alan Colmes," the channel's Brit Hume wrote on Twitter. "He and I agreed on little, but I liked him immensely. Good guy. R.I.P."
