With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. Hop on a bicycle or kayak and you within a few kilometers you'll feel as though you're all alone at one with nature.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

When I was 5 years old my school teacher contacted my parents because of my drawings.
I was obsessed by it and instead of listening the lesson, my mind was in a different world.
When I was a kid, I used to have a lot of nightmares. I thought that creatures wanted to eat me. As soon as I started to paint, my nightmares were gone and my life drastically changed. My monsters became my friends, my family, my brothers. They always talk to me and I like to listen their advice, they guide me.
7 years ago I started to paint on photos. It was a way for me to give another life to places, people and actions that I love. Putting my monsters in existing situations makes me feel like I was there when the photo was taken.
"Once Upon a Place" is a travel across London, Berlin, Stockholm and Helsinki in order to find the inspiration exploring the city and the nature.

Generations of people living within this „granite horseshoe“ made it the centre of European porcelain manufacture. Even today, designers, craftsmen and workers are inspired by this breath-taking landscape, which is portrayed in their products of world-renowned manufactuers of „white gold“.
Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuter, who originated fromThuringia, laid the foundation stone for the porcelain industry in Fichtelgebirge. It was in 1814 that he started building a small factory in Hohenberg upon (a.d.) Eger, a town on the Bohemian border. In 1856 his son, Lorenz, branched out and established his own porcelain factory in Selb. After that, the region between Weiden and Coburg experienced a genuine boom: Uncountable porcelain factories emerged and allowed small farming villages to become industrial settlements.
Manufacturers such as Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Heinrich, Seltmann or Winterling made German porcelain known throughout the world. At an early stage, renowned sculptors and designers cooperated closely with the arts department in the factories. Since the Second World War, the products had stood out not least because of their excellent design. In 1980, over 18,000 people were working in the Bavarian porcelain industry, predominantly in the Fichtelgebirge. North-East Bavaria is still the capital of the European porcelain industry.

The Deutsche PorzellanMuseum settled down as early as 1982 in a building steeped in tradition: In the villa once belonging to the director of the family-owned porcelain company C.M. Hutschenreuther in Hohenberg upon (a.d.)Eger.
The collection at the museum now comprises of about 160,000 porcelain objects.
Porcelain used to be the sole privilege of the aristocracy. All this changed with the coming of industrialisation where it made its way into middle-class sitting rooms and utterly transformed its use and reputation.
Covering a space of 2,000 m2, you can take a look at the courtly world of the Baroque and the Rococo.
Exquisite treasures:
- deliberately elaborate and opulent
- often fanciful
- artistically made
The focus of the presentation lies however in the middle-class porcelain of the 19th and 20th century,
charming to spectacular, sometimes quaint, often flamboyant in colour, crazy in part or exotic in shape and decor, these precious objects depict the lifestyle of the people, the cuisine and official culture of that day in a social context.
Located in a disused former porcelain factory, the Porzellanikon Selb covers more than 9,000 m2 to accommodate three separate museums.
Have you ever wondered just how „white gold“ can be made out of inconspicuous lumps of kaolin? Or have you ever stood between larger-than-life glaze mills rumbling away, or in front of a huge running steam engine providing power for the whole factory? The European Industriemuseum for Porzellan is a museum of working and social history, a museum of technology and a museum of the manufacture of porcelain.
In these rooms the visitor gets an idea of how the clay mass is prepared, how the plaster moulds are made, sees the product with and without decoration: how porcelain was produced and is produced today.
Helmut Drexler is a true master of decoration. Watch him at work and take a look at his end products in this fascinating exhibition area.
Hidden away from view and hardly known: Ceramics is indispensable in mechatronics and space travel, high tech and medicine, chemistry and high-voltage technology. Regardless whether as a gasket in the coffee machine, a brake disk in a high-speed train, or as a knee or ankle joint implanted in the human body, as a printed circuit board in a computer, a thread guide for the textile industry, the surface coating on ski-jumps, or a space shuttle heat shield - you can find ceramics everywhere and especially in places where you least expect it. .
Since 2005 you can find out how this actually looks and works in the Europäischen Museum für Technische Keramik.

Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp.
