Dec 13 is Saint Lucia day in Sweden, where each town's voted "Sankta Lucia" wears a crown of candles and, escorted by girls in white with a red sash and "star boys" brings light and song (and saffron buns!) to homes and workplaces.

1. Christopher Columbus did not, in fact, discover this island. While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. After the true native residents, the Arawak Indians had been defeated by the Hewanorra and Iouanalao Indians, it was not until 1550 that Francois le Clerc made his settlement at Pigeon Island.
2. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass.
3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous.
4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule.
6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C.
7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. The reason why the Gros Islet Street Party is often the most talked about amongst tourists is due to its location. Gros Islet is located in the North of the island, where most of the hotels are, but Anse La Raye and Dennery are a bit of a drive.

Saint Lucia (
i/seɪnt ˈluːʃə/; French: Sainte-Lucie) is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of 617 km2 (238.23 sq mi) and has a population of 174,000 (2010). Its capital is Castries.
The French were the island's first European settlers. They signed a treaty with the native Carib Indians in 1660. England took control of the island from 1663 to 1667. In ensuing years, it was at war with France 14 times, and rule of the island changed frequently (it was seven times each ruled by the French and British). In 1814, the British took definitive control of the island. Because it switched so often between British and French control, Saint Lucia was also known as the "Helen of the West Indies".
Representative government came about in 1840 (with universal suffrage from 1953). From 1958 to 1962, the island was a member of the Federation of the West Indies. On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations associated with the United Kingdom. Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning that it has a legal system based in part on both the civil law and English common law. The Civil Code of St. Lucia of 1867 was based on the Quebec Civil Code of 1866, as supplemented by English common law-style legislation. It is also a member of La Francophonie.

Saint Lucy
Lucia of Syracuse (283–304), also known as Saint Lucy, or Saint Lucia (Italian: Santa Lucia), was a young Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Orthodox Churches. She is one of eight women, who along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, are commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. Her feast day, known as Saint Lucy's Day, is celebrated in the West on 13 December. St. Lucia of Syracuse was honored in the Middle Ages and remained a well-known saint in early modern England.

All that is really known for certain of Lucy is that she was a martyr in Syracuse during the Diocletianic Persecution of 304 AD. Her veneration spread to Rome, and by the 6th century to the whole Church. The oldest archaeological evidence comes from the Greek inscriptions from the catacombs of St. John in Syracuse.
The oldest record of her story comes from the fifth-century Acts. Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda Aurea was the most widely read version of the Lucy legend in the Middle Ages. In medieval accounts, Saint Lucy's eyes are gouged out prior to her execution.

Gros Islet
Gros Islet (English: Large Island) is a community located near the northern tip of the island country of Saint Lucia. Originally a quiet fishing village, it has gone on to become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country.
Originally settled by the Carib (and possibly Arawak), a French map from 1717 provides the first identification of the area as Gros Islet. The community has had a long history of being a Roman Catholic parish, as the first priests who arrived on the island settled in the village in 1749. Gros Islet was first settled by the French from Martinique.
In 1778, as a retaliation for the declaration of war on the British by the French, the British navy captured the island of Saint Lucia from the French, and built a naval base at Gros Islet Bay in 1782 - temporarily changing the name to Fort Rodney. The island as a whole has switched hands between the British and French throughout its existence.
In modern times, the community has continued to flourish. Between 1991 and 2001 the population rose 54%; the highest rise in the country. In 2001, the population was 19,409, making it the second most-populous community in Saint Lucia, up from 13,505 in the 1991 census and 10,164 in the 1980 edition. Of this number, 9,307 were male and 10,102 were female.

1. Christopher Columbus did not, in fact, discover this island. While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. After the true native residents, the Arawak Indians had been defeated by the Hewanorra and Iouanalao Indians, it was not until 1550 that Francois le Clerc made his settlement at Pigeon Island.
2. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass.
3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous.
4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule.
6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C.
7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. The reason why the Gros Islet Street Party is often the most talked about amongst tourists is due to its location. Gros Islet is located in the North of the island, where most of the hotels are, but Anse La Raye and Dennery are a bit of a drive.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Saint Lucia.

1. Christopher Columbus did not, in fact, discover this island. While it is true that the island was along the route this world-famous explorer sailed, it is not credited to him. After the true native residents, the Arawak Indians had been defeated by the Hewanorra and Iouanalao Indians, it was not until 1550 that Francois le Clerc made his settlement at Pigeon Island.
2. Castries, the capital city of St Lucia, is actually located in a flood gut region. Interestingly, Castries has been built on a reclaimed land mass.
3. The Pitons Management Area containing much of a collapsed stratovolcano known as the Soufriere Volcanic Centre, became a World Heritage Site. The Pitons – Gros Piton and Petit Piton – are twin volcanic peaks that rise from the sea. These marvelous volcanic monuments have contributed in a big way to making St Lucia very famous.
4. Sulphur Springs Park that is over thousands of years old and is a very historical site to behold, guarantees visions of an active volcano vent that spews mountains of mud.
5. Both France and England continuously struggled to establish sole control over St Lucia throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries. In the bargain, this island nation changed hands 14 separate times. In 1814, St Lucia was surrendered to the United Kingdom, and came under British rule.
6. The Temperature Is Pleasant All Year Round. Thanks to the island’s Caribbean location, it has a pleasingly consistent year-round temperature. The monthly averages in St Lucia only dip below25°C in January and February, and never rise above a perfect 30°C.
7. In St. Lucia, there are three well-known parties that occur every single week of the year (with the exception of Good Friday, if it's a Friday party). There is the Anse La Raye Fish Fry, the Dennery Fish Fry and the Gros Islet "Jump Up". Anse La Raye's event and the Gros Islet Street Party occur on Friday nights and the Dennery Fish Fry is on a Saturday night. These are local parties that literally occur in the streets of their respective fishing villages and involve local vendors coming together to sell their authentic food and drink. The streets are flooded with people, music and dancing, and tourists often join in on the fun. The reason why the Gros Islet Street Party is often the most talked about amongst tourists is due to its location. Gros Islet is located in the North of the island, where most of the hotels are, but Anse La Raye and Dennery are a bit of a drive.

Saint Lucia Vacation 2015 (GoPro Video)
An edited GoPro video of our week in Saint Lucia from February of 2015. We spent time hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, boating, exploring, a helicopter ride and much more! We stayed at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian located at Gros Islet on the north end of the island. The first excursion we did was with Joe Knows Tours, called the Land & Sea Tour. This was a lot of fun and at the same time it allowed us to take in a lot of activities in a single day. We cruised in a speedboat to the south end of the island near the Pitons where we visited the Sulphur Springs for a mud bath. Here is a helpful guide of thing to do in St. Lucia. I know it is the season to go traveling and some of us are still trying to figure out where we would like to go. So I decided to make a video on St. Lucia, a island that is close to my heart and I like to call my second home. There so much to do and see on this island that will leave you in hopes to come back to the island of happiness and memorable memories.
I will be making more travel guides of places that I have been gone too to hopefully inspire you all to travel and help you with any concerns or questions you may have about that destination.

An edited GoPro video of our week in Saint Lucia from February of 2015. We spent time hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, boating, exploring, a helicopter ride and much more! We stayed at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian located at Gros Islet on the north end of the island.
The first excursion we did was with Joe Knows Tours, called the Land & Sea Tour. This was a lot of fun and at the same time it allowed us to take in a lot of activities in a single day. We cruised in a speedboat to the south end of the island near the Pitons where we visited the Sulphur Springs for a mud bath. Next, we swam in a waterfall and had lunch with a view of the Pitons in the background. After getting back on the boat, we went to a nearby beach/bay area for snorkeling. These tour guides are all about having fun and entertaining the guests to make sure they have a good time!
The second day trip we took was with Paradise Excursions, which led us to the top of Gros Piton, (elevation ~2,500 ft) with amazing views! John Nestor was an excellent tour guide; he was very knowledgeable and proud of the island. After spending the day with him and completing the challenging hike, he took us to one of his personal favorite restaurants in Soufrière. It was a small vegan eatery called Jah Lamb's where we had an amazing meal!
The helicopter ride when we left the resort was booked with Island Routes, through Sandals. The resort was about a 90-minute drive from the airport when we arrived, so checking out the helicopter was a must, after hearing several people talking about the great views it provided.

Troy takes the team to Castries Market (in the heart of the island’s capital that goes by the same name) to meet up with a famous chef, Orlando Satchell. The colors, sounds, sights and the smells live up to the spicy and eclectic reputation of Caribbean cuisine from the region. After grabbing ingredients, the crew head to a heritage home called Greenwood Terrace, perched on the outlying hills of Castries, to prepare their feast. From pumpkin and spinach soup, to Cocoa Mahi Mahi, Orlando shared mouth-watering secrets of the regional delicacies. The adventure continued late into the night with a bustling, beachside jump-up street party. The perfect day and way to end the trip: music, drinks, rubbing shoulders with the locals.

It’s Sarah’s turn and her first activity brings together her love of animals with a jungle adventure: having discovered Morne Coubaril Estate before the trip, she locks in a deal for a privately-guided horseback through the jungles of Qualibou Volcano. If you want to get a sense of the rugged terrain, the down-to-earth people and the omnipresence of mother nature in Saint Lucia, this episode is for you. Travel Basecamp Martinique / Saint Lucia launches with an adrenaline-pumping day of racing traditional Yole sail boats. The adventure starts off the island’s east coast, an hour or so from Fort-de-France. Moving at high speeds and dangling precariously over emerald waters — these boats are designed to stay afloat only while in motion: in other words, if the boat stops, it sinks! Our teacher and pro-racer Jean-Yves Aglae teaches Basecampers the technical ins-and-outs of Martinique’s most popular sport (the Le Tour de Yoles Rondes is the largest sporting event on the island). The race culminates at the gorgeous and secluded “Oscar Island.” There, we kick back and enjoy the evening and massage sore muscles. What a way to start the trip: heart-pumping activity, gorgeous Caribbean waters, a crimson sunset — and a mouth full of sand for Basecamper Sarah. ;)

Martinique has it’s own annual carnival festival... and it rocks. But just because we missed it, doesn’t mean we can’t still experience what it’s all about — that’s the whole point of Travel Basecamp. For our second episode in the series, Sarah takes the crew to the bay of Fort-De-France where the massive stone turrets of Fort Saint Louis set the backdrop. There they meet dozens of members of the - INSERT NAME OF - marching band, dressed in brilliant colors and surrounded by instruments of all shapes and kinds. Helped by the band’s leader, Jessy Ambroisine, the Basecampers are set up with traditional face paint and costumes, strapped with drums to their chests and join the band. What starts as a simple practice session walking along the Caribbean boardwalk, turns into a full-out flash street party. The beat of the drums set the rhythm as tourists and locals alike joined in to shake their booty.
NEXT EPISODE, After locking down a massive Catamaran to take them to Saint Lucia, Sarah steps up to deliver the third activity of the season: horseback riding on a volcano! No joke.

This is the fourth video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We interview Jennifer Aston, from WHL (http://www.southafricahotel-link.com/) and ask her how she views the position of responsible tourism in South Africa, and any practical tips she can provide to help people to reduce their negative impact. We then meet with a local friend and tour guide (Siviwe Mbinda) for walking tour around Langa - the first black township in Cape Town. He explains the history from apartheid to current day, and how tourism has helped benefit the local community. We even share a beer and watch a soccer game in a shebeen with the locals.

We meet with a local friend and tour guide (Shaqir Erasmus) for a local breakfast and hike up Lion's Head (Part of the Table Mountain National Park). From a geographical and natural perspective, he explains the wildlife, scenery and history. From the times of when the Khoikhoi (indigenous peoples who inhabited the area since the 5th Century AD) ran their cattle along the tracks of the mountain, to the endangered floral species such as the Silver Tree. We manage to meet the mountain ranger who also gives us a few tips and advice on safety. Don't forget to bring your water bottle guys!
