Culture Shock Series is a series of genuine, often amusing, sometimes sensitive, short videos exploring the culture and subcultures of the country we're currently visiting, from the mouth of the people who experience it daily. The way these videos were put together is by asking people to define or explain the topic at hand, unprompted. In this case it's the Dominican Republic and we're talking about food. We hope for these videos to generate a conversation, as many of the culture shock topics are, by definition, touchy subjects with complicated backgrounds. The views of the videos are not our own, but those of the people we interviewed. We tried to always sample a wide variety of views and opinions and kept everyone's answers. Please join into the conversation and check out the orig...
From bachata and merengue, to baseball and homegrown food, the art and culture of the Dominican Republic is colorful and diverse.
The history of the Dominican Republic is the result of an unlikely mixture of influences; nowhere else will you find a blending of European, African, and native Taíno Indian cultures. These distinct cultures still drive the social identity of the people today. Every aspect of their food, music, art, sports and religion provides a unique insight into the development of their country. In a single day you can experience both ancient and modern cultures from around the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food. As a former Spanish Colony, many of its dishes carry a familiar Latin American feel. Lots of rice, beans, meat and seafood can be found in their cuisine. However, strong influences from its heritage give the meals a unique twist. Traditional Taíno dishes are still made feat...

Over the last few decades, the Dominican Republic has changed the face of American baseball by churning out talented players whose humble beginnings have helped cultivate a unique passion for the game. That passion is often due to dire circumstances that drive all focus to the diamond instead of the classroom. We sent Jaimie Sanchez to Boca Chica, a small, rural town that is home to the MLB's training camps to visit Junior Noboa. Junior is the head of Latin American Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has helped develop a digital education program for their young players. Baseball is no joke in the Dominican Republic. Through a chance-connection with a local baseball team, Addy brings the basecampers to watch a game in Boca Chica, near Santo Domingo. But since Rodrigo is a "doer" and not a "watcher," he manages to convince the coach to let them play!
