Yoram Globus (Hebrew: יורם גלובוס; born 7 October 1943), is an Israeli film producer, cinema owner and distributor who is most famous for his association with Cannon Films Inc., a company he ran with his cousin Menahem Golan.
In 1978, Globus and his cousin Menahem Golan moved to Hollywood and purchased the film production company "Cannon" ("The Cannon Group") for $500,000. By the mid-80s Cannon had produced an average of 40 films a year and had become the largest independent production company in the world with a net worth of over 1 billion dollars. Because of their fast, low-budget style of filmmaking, they earned the nickname "the Go-Go Boys." For years the name Golan-Globus symbolized Hollywood's last moguls and an inspiration corner stone to a new generation of film makers. In addition Golan and Globus opened the foreign market of the world film industry to the United States. Among the films produced by them are "Blood Sports" with Jean-Claude Van Damme, "Superman 4" with Christopher Reeve, "King Lear” directed by Jean-Luc Godard and Runaway Train (1985), "Over The Top" with Sylvester Stallone and "Street Smart" with Morgan Freeman. In addition, they acquired the rights to movies like “Spiderman”, “Captain America” and more.
Menahem Golan (Hebrew: מנחם גולן; May 31, 1929 – August 8, 2014) was an Israeli director and producer. He is best known as the co-owner, with his cousin Yoram Globus, of The Cannon Group, a company that specialized in low-to-mid budget American films during the 1980s after Golan and Globus achieved significant success as filmmakers in their native Israel during the 1970s.
Golan produced movies featuring such stars as Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Charles Bronson, and was known for a period as a producer of comic book-style movies like Masters of the Universe, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Captain America, and his aborted attempt to bring Spider-Man to the silver screen. Using the pen name of Joseph Goldman, Golan also wrote and "polished" film scripts. Golan produced about 200 films, directed 44, and won eight Violin David Awards as well as The Israel Prize in Cinema.
Menahem Golan was born on May 31, 1929, in Tiberias, then Mandate Palestine. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russian Poland. He spent his early years in Tiberias, then studied directing at the Old Vic School and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and film making at New York University. During the Israeli War of Independence, Golan served as a pilot in the Israeli Air Force.
A cannon (plural: cannon or cannons) is any piece of artillery that uses gunpowder or other usually explosive-based propellants to launch a projectile. Cannon vary in calibre, range, mobility, rate of fire, angle of fire, and firepower; different forms of cannon combine and balance these attributes in varying degrees, depending on their intended use on the battlefield. The word cannon is derived from several languages, in which the original definition can usually be translated as tube, cane, or reed. In the modern era, the term cannon has fallen into decline, replaced by "guns" or "artillery" if not a more specific term such as "mortar" or "howitzer", except for in the field of aerial warfare, where it is often used as shorthand for autocannon.
First invented in China, cannon were among the earliest forms of gunpowder artillery, and over time replaced siege engines—among other forms of ageing weaponry—on the battlefield. In the Middle East, the first use of the hand cannon is argued to be during the 1260 Battle of Ain Jalut between the Mamluks and Mongols. The first cannon in Europe were in use in Iberia by the mid-13th century. It was during this period, the Middle Ages, that cannon became standardized, and more effective in both the anti-infantry and siege roles. After the Middle Ages most large cannon were abandoned in favour of greater numbers of lighter, more maneuverable pieces. In addition, new technologies and tactics were developed, making most defences obsolete; this led to the construction of star forts, specifically designed to withstand artillery bombardment though these too (along with the Martello Tower) would find themselves rendered obsolete when explosive and armour piercing rounds made even these types of fortifications vulnerable.
The Cannon Group, Inc. was an American group of companies, including Cannon Films, which produced a distinctive line of low-to medium-budget films from 1967 to 1994. The extensive group also owned, amongst others, a large international cinema chain and a video film company that invested heavily in the video market, buying the international video rights to several classic film libraries.
The company was much more popular in the United Kingdom than in its native United States, which is likely due to the company's ownership of several cinema chains in the UK.
Cannon Films was incorporated on October 23, 1967. It was formed by Dennis Friedland and Chris Dewey while they were in their early 20s. They had immediate success producing English-language versions of Swedish soft porn films directed by Joseph W. Sarno: Inga (1968), aka Jag - en oskuld and To Ingrid, My Love, Lisa (1968), aka Kvinnolek. By 1970, they had produced films on a larger production scale than a lot of major distributors, such as Joe, starring Peter Boyle. They managed this by tightly limiting their budgets to $300,000 per picture—or less, in some cases. However, as the 1970s moved on, a string of unsuccessful movies seriously drained Cannon’s capital. This, along with changes to film-production tax laws, led to a drop in Cannon's stock price.

In this post-“Man of Steel” era, it is perhaps worth reminding yourself that there is another truly, deeply awful Superman film out there, but watching 1987's “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace” is a horribly cruel thing to do to yourself. Instead, try this: a 1986 documentary on the mad business that was The Cannon Group, the most dynamic and radical movie studio of the '80s, who were brought low the next year when 'Superman IV' flopped. The Cannon Group was, really, just two Israeli cousins, Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan, whose very existence made Hollywood bigwigs wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, yelling incoherently about Vietnam veterans and break-dancing. Globus and Golan rode the wave of the VHS revolution by buying almost any script they could get their hands on...

Why I Love Cannon films, The Cannon Group. Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. I've always enjoyed films made by the Cannon Group and recently I watched the documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. ¿Qué tendrá la Cannon para inspirar no uno, sino dos documentales? La respuesta es fácil: cinefilia sin complejos, descaro y dos grandes cerebros, Menahem Golam y Yoram Globus. Here is a tribute to Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus and some of there great films. The Cannon Group was the biggest film company in the 1980's and did not deserve what it got. Golan and Globus are fantastic filmmakers and their style will be sorely missed. They made some films that are considered classics today such as "Missing In Action" starring Chuck Norris and "Death Wish 3" starring Charles Bronson. Here are some great Cannon sites: http://www.cannonfilms.com/ http://www.cannon.org.uk/ Music: "Communion" (1989) end credits theme composed and performed by Alan Clarke. I feel the gentle, yet awesome guitar work sets the right mood.
Between 1981 and 1984, under the leadership of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, the Cannon Group Inc. produced an anthology series of 3 ninja movies collectively known as "The Ninja Trilogy". Enter the Ninja (1981), Revenge of the Ninja (1983), and Ninja III: The Domination (1984), all starred legendary martial artist and ninja movie superstar Sho Kosugi, and ignited a worldwide ninja craze in the early 1980s. This tribute video incorporates all 3 original movie trailers (including a rebuilt trailer for Ninja III) book-ended with new custom opening and closing credits.

"Hollywood is a money animal". The final chapter in the extraordinary life and career of MENAHEM GOLAN, legendary Palestinian-born Israeli movie director, producer, mogul and "madman". Now in his eighties and living in Jaffa, Golan looks back to his great Cannon days in Hollywood, forwards to a new blockbuster with Al Pacino – and dreams of the Oscar he has always wanted... This is the third and final part in a trilogy about Golan. The first was 'The Last Moguls' (1986, BBC); the second was 'Shooting Versace' (1998, BBC). Golan died suddenly, in the street in Jaffa, in August 2014, still talking about his plans for the future. His wife Rachel, who appears in the film, died in July 2015.
