Posted on March 23, 2017 at 12:23 pm | No Comments

Small consolation, I know. Some of the songs are streamable below, others you’ll have to hunt down (maybe on my monthly playlists?), and a few include a little extra info.
Join us next month at ONCE on Monday, April 24th and avoid any potential lingering regret.

[Last Week’s Playlist] February’s NEW MUSIC NIGHT at ONCE Somerville
Posted on February 18, 2017 at 3:35 pm | No Comments
The first New Music Night of the #SCROTUS era happened last week at the ONCE Lounge in Somerville, Massachusetts, and it I’m going to guess that the lighter-than-usual attendance was due to a certain sporting event that took place the night before. [Nac Faves] My Favorite Music of 2016 (and, um, 2015 too)
Posted on January 31, 2017 at 12:27 pm | No Comments
Let’s list! While most music-centric sites try to get their faves posted by end-of-year, my goal is always to get this thing up sometime in January (made it). I listen to a ton of new music in December, and revisit early-year faves, so things never settle until the calendar turns. Should go without saying at this point (as with almost any list about anything ever) but these are not “the best”, these are “my favorites”. Albums I had time to hear and that demanded more once I did. The sounds that got me through. Because jeez, the year tried to set a high bar for brutal. And the new one is already clearing it.
Some years back, while posting yet another overdue annual musical faves wrap-up in a fast-fading February, I prefaced it with something like “… sharing this in March sure would have been embarrassing!” If that was true, imagine how I feel about punting for a whole year. Not that anyone noticed in the list flood we drown in, but yeah, I procrastinated 2015 entirely. First one I’ve missed in ages, but I’m going to remedy that now by posting a belated rundown below, alongside my 2016 faves.
So here they are, my favorite records from 2016 followed by those from 2015 – mostly long-players along with some short-players and comps. Read, explore, absorb, and click the label links to buy direct. Support those who make the music you love with your dollars, and no, streaming doesn’t count.
Stream a 32-track Soundcloud playlist of songs from most of the releases listed below.
Check out previous year-end faves lists: 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, and 2001.

Oh, my heart.

Posted on November 28, 2016 at 10:01 am | No Comments
The November edition of New Music Night goes down this evening at the ONCE Lounge in Somerville, and I’m deep into prepping the 2-hour playlist of nothing but new tracks. While you’re absorbing the carefully-selected songs (and savoring tacos from the ONCE kitchen), I’ll be picking winners’ names for tickets to some ace upcoming local shows, including Boston-area appearances from Kristin Hersh, Matt Pond PA, Sad13 (Sadie from Speedy Ortiz), and Kurt Vile. Admission is free, taco time starts at 5pm, and I’ll be behind the DJ table promptly at 6 o’clock. Come hang, chow down, listen up, and say hello if you get a chance.
Bonus: As New Music Night wraps up at 8pm, another excellent Bob Colby-presented show kicks off with sets from Só Sol and Cold Expectations. Admission is also free, though donations are encouraged, so toss some dollars in the hat if you’re so inclined. Find more details over on the FB event page.
