High Street Tour of my closest Town. Horley is a town in Surrey on the border of Surrey and West Sussex, England. Horley is a small but busy town of over 20,000 people situated almost half way between London and Brighton on the south coast. It is mainly residential and sits astride both the main line railway and the A23 main road, between the two locations, close by London Gatwick Airport. With fast links by train round-the-clock to London. In the past the Weald was a densely forested and marshy area. During Saxon times, the Manor of Horley came under the control of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the Manor was within the hundred known as Cherchefelle which in 1199 became known as Reigate. The Manor passed to Henry VIII on the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 and changed hands several times during the next sixty years.
The stone building with the ghost sign (Auctioneers Baker &) was a Technical Institute around 1904 but was previously a bank and later became the Public Library. Baker & Baker were two brothers.
Baker, Arthur. Born Sussex c 1865. Lived in Massetts Road 1901. "Mr. Arthur Baker of the firm Baker and Baker is the exact counterpart of his brother who overlooks him. It is said that brothers in business seldom agree. This cannot be said of Baker and Baker, who are as they should be, the support of each other. A considerable time since Mr. Arthur Baker passed through a long illness. The amount of sympathy extended to him on that occasion testified to the deep feeling of respect entertained for him." Horley Advertiser Dec. 22, 1906.
Baker, George. George was in partnership with his brother Arthur, (above). They were surveyors and valuers and had an estate office in the store building in the High Street. Later they had their office in the new building on the corner of Massetts Road and Victoria Road (now a Salvation Army charity shop). They also ran the Horley Market in Smallfield Road. Records Held by: Surrey History Centre, not available at The National Archives Date: 1896-1952 Description: Baker & Baker records incl out letter books, cash books, sales ledger and rent collection books. In the County Post for 9th December 1960 it states that the Market buildings are being pulled down to make way for modern buildings (presumably part of today’s Windmill Close) It also said that it originally belonged to Messrs Baker & Baker (auctioneers, surveyors & estate agents then on the corner of Victoria & Massetts Roads) and was opened as a market about 1914. Upon the death of Mr George Baker in 1952 it was purchased by Messrs Wood, Son & Gardner of Crawley who carried on the business until it was finally sold and closed in June 1959. Jennings, Arthur Edward. Arthur Jennings was born in Horley c1849 the third son of Stephen Henry Jennings, below, he established a building business in Massetts Rd. The builder's yard was later taken over by E. E. Mitchell. Arthur was a member of Horley Parish Council. He built Horley Fire Station in Albert Road and most of the houses in Russell Crescent, Ringley Avenue and Massetts Road. Arthur married Susan from Horley, they had a son also Arthur was born Horley c 1881 and he was a carpenter. The footbridge is near the site of former Horley Station. However, despite having no connection with the station, this section was not renamed High Street until almost 60 years later, in 1961. On the 18/06/16 Horley put on it's 4th Carnival. Biggest one yet. It's theme for this year was 'Through the Ages and Beyond'. Well done to all the people that put in so much work.

The first day of a proposed 5 day strike by the RMT Union on Southern Rail. Not a lot of trains stopping at Horley station - hence the quiet platforms. Various stock speeds through, between Brighton; Gatwick; Reading; and London terminals. The only thing missing is tumbleweed blowing across the platforms!
There are various Classes of EMU (mostly 377 / 387 / the relatively new 700's) plus a couple of Class 442 Wessex GX and a few Class 166 GWR DMU sets. Paintwork is Southern; Thameslink; Gatwick Express (GX on the new paintwork) and GWR livery on the DMUs.
Was hoping to capture some freight (mostly mineral / ballast trains). There were a few on the schedule that might have operated during this period, but none of them made an appearance.
The aircraft are flying into Gatwick Airport - the next stop south from Horley.

Horley is a town in Surrey on the border of Surrey and West Sussex, England, south of the twin towns of Reigate and Redhill, and neighbouring Gatwick Airport and in turn Crawley. With fast links by train round-the-clock to London from Horley railway station, it qualifies as a commuter town and has a significant economy of its own, including business parks and a relatively long high street.
History
In the past the Weald was a densely forested and marshy area. During Saxon times, the Manor of Horley came under the control of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the Manor was within the hundred known as Cherchefelle which in 1199 became known as Reigate. The Manor passed to Henry VIII on the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539 and changed hands several times during the next sixty years.
About 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east is the overgrown but well-preserved site of Thunderfield Castle, a twelfth-century ring and bailey castle.

High Street
High Street (or the High Street, also High Road) is a metonym for the concept (and frequently the street name) of the primary business street of towns or cities, especially in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Nations. To distinguish it from "centres" of nearby places it is frequently preceded unofficially by the name of its settlement. In a town it implies the focal point for business, especially shops and street stalls (if any) in town and city centres. On the 07/06/14 Horley put on it's 2nd Carnival after a 10 years gap, and it didn't disappoint. It's theme for this year was Musicals. Well done to all the people that put in so much work. Just watch and wait to see the Lion King one at the end....WOW

The first day of a proposed 5 day strike by the RMT Union on Southern Rail. Not a lot of trains stopping at Horley station - hence the quiet platforms. Various stock speeds through, between Brighton; Gatwick; Reading; and London terminals. The only thing missing is tumbleweed blowing across the platforms!
There are various Classes of EMU (mostly 377 / 387 / the relatively new 700's) plus a couple of Class 442 Wessex GX and a few Class 166 GWR DMU sets. Paintwork is Southern; Thameslink; Gatwick Express (GX on the new paintwork) and GWR livery on the DMUs.
Was hoping to capture some freight (mostly mineral / ballast trains). There were a few on the schedule that might have operated during this period, but none of them made an appearance.
The aircraft are flying into Gatwick Airport - the next stop south from Horley.

Just a little tour of Victoria Station in London, England. I went there to take the Victoria line to Marylebone station but lo and behold when I got there it was jampacked because part of the Victoria line had shut down, so I just took the number 2 bus.

A magical place and a perfect safari destination. Adventure and great fun are guaranteed in Botswana. This time we embarked on the ultimate Okavango Delta safari: 9 nights, 4 varied camps through the heart of the Delta. We were given opportunities to experience a whole range of activities, from land-based game drives – although further north more through the water in the Land Rover than on the land – to boat cruises through the channels, chasing the elusive malachite kingfisher or gazing at a crocodile as it glides through the water underneath the boat. We tried fishing for Africa’s famous tiger fish, enjoyed a fantastic walking safari and moved silently over the crystal clear waters in a mokoro. What a variety of ways to experience Africa’s Eden.
This way you can get the big game, experience the solitude and wide and wild spaces. Enjoy the smaller things out there and also get great photographs of lions and leopards. Learning, experiencing, touching, feeling, and even tasting! We flew over the lagoons and rivers, appreciating the size and splendor of the Okavango Delta, and we boated between camps to get an idea of the channels and hidden hippo hideouts.
Chitabe Lediba was a cracker place to start our safari. The staff was simply amazing, and the game viewing of the very best I have come across on the African continent. 4 Lionesses had killed a giraffe so close to camp that we could hear them at night.
Tubu Tree Camp is beautifully situated in the canopy of the trees. This is leopard paradise, and this is where we got most of our total of 8 leopard sightings for the trip! We also watched, daily, as a flood of animals moved north across the plains in front of camp towards the floodwaters moving south right towards the camp. Nothing like 200 elephants parading in single file across an open plain!
We journeyed by land and then boat towards Jao Camp, where we met the floodwaters, watched the front trickling across the path of least resistance over this flat land. What an experience: we were part of the flood, we were in it, and we were loving it! Jao gave us the opportunity to spend time on the water and we absolutely loved the boat cruises, which were intimate, informative and thrilling! GnT with the hippos as the orange-red sun sets over the water. Hyeanas and hippos serenaded us at night and baboons and mongooses entertained during the day.
We went from Jao to Abu Camp for our final night on safari. Abu is a magnificent lodge and offers the opportunity to become a part of an elephant herd, deep in Botswana’s wilderness. It was incredible for all of us. Educational, emotional and exciting. A wonderful finale to a very, very special Safari.
