Newsome

Newsome is a village situated approximately 1 mile south of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It is in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees. The village lies at the centre of Newsome Ward to which it gives its name.

Geography

Newsome stands on a shoulder of land below Castle Hill and above the valley where the River Holme meets the River Colne. The village lies between Berry Brow, Hall Bower and Taylor Hill.

Facilities

The village has both housing and industrial units, the latter mostly within the site of the former Newsome Mill, which used to produce woollen textiles. It had a large bakehouse (which makes award winning pork pies).

Schools

There is a secondary school, Newsome High School and Sports College to the south west of the village centre; one of three secondary schools in the area governed by Kirklees to be recognised as a specialist sports college since the government's inception of the programme in 1994. The school's assistant head teacher was named West Yorkshire Teacher of the Year 2006 for an award sponsored by Pulse Radio. The Victorian infant and nursery school 'Stile Common Infant and Nursery School', close to the village centre, was closed down and replaced by newly built Hillside Primary School. A specialist school, Castle Hill school, for children aged 3 – 19, with Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities is located to the south west of the village, by Berry Brow, to support children from within the Huddersfield catchment area. The Huddersfield Examiner announced on 11 July 2009 that the specialist school in Newsome had one confirmed case of swine flu.

Chris Newsome

Christopher Elijah Newsome (born July 25, 1990) is a Filipino American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Meralco Bolts in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Early life and high school career

Newsome was born in San Jose, California. He is the second child of Eric, an African-American, and Carmelita (née Duque), a Filipina, who hails from Parañaque. He has an older brother, Eric Jr., and younger sisters Nishelle and Melissa. When the Newsomes moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, he attended his secondary education at Rio Rancho High School. His first sport was baseball and football, but did not play basketball until he reached seventh grade. He helped the Rio Rancho HS Rams win the 5A State Championship in 2007.

Collegiate career

Newsome attended the New Mexico Highlands University, a NCAA Division II school for three years. In his final season with the Cowboys in 2011, he averaged 10.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per outing. He was recruited by then-Ateneo head coach Norman Black to play for the Blue Eagles and for the Philippine national team that will play for the Southeast Asian Games. He accepted the offer and spent two years of residency (as per UAAP rules for foreign students) before finally seeing action for Ateneo in 2013. In his final season with the Blue Eagles, he posted averages of 14 PPG and 8 RPG while earning a spot among the UAAP Season 77 Mythical 5 team.

Joanna Newsom

Joanna Caroline Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American harpist, keyboardist, vocalist, lyricist and actress.

Early life

Newsom was born and raised in the small town of Nevada City, California. Her mother, Christine (née Mueller), is an internist, and her father, William Newsom, is a medical oncologist. Her parents were "progressive-minded professionals" who previously lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.

As a child, Newsom was not allowed to watch television or listen to the radio. She describes her parents as "kind of idealists when it came to hoping they could protect us from bad influences, like violent movies, or stupid stuff". She was exposed to music from a young age. Her father played the guitar and her mother was a classically trained pianist who played the hammered dulcimer, the autoharp and conga drums. Newsom attended a Waldorf school where she studied theater and learned to memorize and recite long poems.

At the age of five, Newsom asked her parents if she could learn to play the harp. Her parents eventually agreed to sign her up for harp lessons, but the local harp instructor did not want to take on such a young student and suggested she learn to play the piano first. She did, and later moved on to the harp which she "loved from the first lesson onward." She first played on smaller Celtic harps until her parents bought her a full-size pedal harp in the seventh grade.
