Apollonius of Rhodes (Ancient Greek: Απολλώνιος Ρόδιος Apollónios Ródios; Latin: Apollonius Rhodius; fl. first half of 3rd century BCE), is best known as the author of the Argonautica, an epic poem about Jason and the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece. The poem is one of the few extant examples of the epic genre and it was both innovative and influential, providing Ptolemaic Egypt with a "cultural mnemonic" or national "archive of images", and offering the Latin poets Virgil and Gaius Valerius Flaccus a model for their own epics. His other poems, which survive only in small fragments, concerned the beginnings or foundations of cities, such as Alexandria and Cnidus – places of interest to the Ptolemies, whom he served as a scholar and librarian at the Library of Alexandria. A literary dispute with Callimachus, another Alexandrian librarian/poet, is a topic much discussed by modern scholars since it is thought to give some insight into their poetry, although there is very little evidence that there ever was such a dispute between the two men. In fact almost nothing at all is known about Apollonius and even his connection with Rhodes is a matter for speculation. Once considered a mere imitator of Homer, and therefore a failure as a poet, his reputation has been enhanced by recent studies, with an emphasis on the special characteristics of Hellenistic poets as scholarly heirs of a long literary tradition writing at a unique time in history.

CAVAFY POEMS #119 Apollonius of Tyana at Rhodes Adapted & Read by CHARLES BRYANT A rich young man was building a house on Rhodes. Apollonius paused to speak with him. The young man said (aware he was addressing the renowned, the eminent Pythagorean philosopher): "A statue worked in ivory and gold - chryselephantine -" (with a little smile) embellishes even the smallest shrine. But a plain clay image cheapens the largest church." Apollonius smiled and shook his head and walked away. He who after all had said prayer and sacrifice were worthless and only the god in man could witness God.
This is the story of Jason in mythology for a grade 10 English project I made. Sorry for background noise. ---Script--- • This is a story about a boy named Jason • This is Jason's father. He is the rightful king of Iolcus. • Now this is Pelias. He is Jason's uncle and the king's brother. This is what he did. He took over Jason's father's throne, and imprisoned him. • Pelias lived in constant fear of losing what he had taken so unjustly, so he planned to murder Jason at birth. • However, Jason's mother deceived him by mourning as if Jason had died. • Meanwhile, the infant was bundled off to the wilderness cave of Chiron the Centaur, where Jason grew up and was tutored. • Now Pelias honoured every god, except for Hera. Because of this, her plan to help Jason went into effect. She needed to k...

Apollonius of Tyana. Words from Apollonius. Jonathan Manning Roberts, Antiquity Unveiled. PAT, Ascension.
The life of Jesus as portrayed in the gospels corresponds to the worldwide Mythic Hero Archetype in which a divine hero's birth is supernaturally predicted and conceived, the infant hero escapes attempts to kill him, demonstrates his precocious wisdom already as a child, receives a divine commission, defeats demons, wins acclaim, is hailed as king, then betrayed, losing popular favor, executed, often on a hilltop, and is vindicated and taken up to heaven. These features are found world wide in heroic myths and epics. The more closely a supposed biography, say that of Hercules, Apollonius of Tyana, Padma Sambhava, of Gautama Buddha, corresponds to this plot formula, the more likely the historian is to conclude that a historical figure has been transfigured by myth. The passion stories...
2000 years ago there were some great writers such as Apollonius, Justus, and Juvenal. What did Jesus write?

LibriVox recording of The Life of Apollonius of Tyana, by Flavius Philostratus. Apollonius of Tyana (ca. 40-120 AD) was a Greek Pythagorean philosopher and teacher. He hailed from the town of Tyana in the Roman province of Cappadocia in Asia Minor. His date of birth is a matter of conjecture as some say he was roughly a contemporary of Jesus. After Apollonius' death his name remained famous among philosophers and occultists. In a "novelistic invention" inserted in the Historia Augusta, Aurelian, at the siege of Tyana in 272, was said to have experienced a visionary dream in which Aurelian claimed to have seen Apollonius speak to him, beseeching him to spare the city of his birth. In part, Aurelian said that Apollonius told him "Aurelian, if you desire to rule, abstain from the blood of ...
Le fatiche di Ercole (English: The labors of Hercules; English title: Hercules) is an Italian epic fantasy, peplum genre film based upon the Hercules and the Quest for the Golden Fleece myths. The film stars Steve Reeves as the titular hero and Sylva Koscina as his love interest Princess Iole. Hercules was directed by Pietro Francisci and produced by Federico Teti. The film spawned a sequel, Hercules Unchained (Italian: Ercole e la Regina di Lidia), that also starred Reeves and Koscina. Source Material: The film's screenplay is based loosely upon the myths of Hercules and the Greek epic poem Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes. In both myths and epic poem, Hercules' role in the Quest for the Golden Fleece is marginal; he abandons the expedition early-on when Hylas, his armor-...
The great Theosophist of the first century B.C. was the personage known today as Jesus Christ. The great Theosophist of the first century A.D. was Apollonius of Tyana. The lives of these two men are strikingly similar in their aim, purpose and teaching. Both were members of that great Fraternity of Perfected Beings who stand behind the Theosophical Movement. The differences between Apollonius and Jesus are in their personal lives and the presentation of their philosophy. Both came to show us the way and both were mistreated.
Apollonius of Tyana, the Nazarene. Born A.D. 2, died A.D. 99. His history and teachings appropriated to formulate Christianity. The original gospels of the New Testament brought from India
