Norman Granz (August 6, 1918 – November 22, 2001) was an American jazz music impresario.
Granz was a fundamental figure in American jazz, especially from about 1947 to 1960. He was the founder of five record labels: Clef, Norgran, Down Home, Verve and Pablo. Granz was acknowledged as "the most successful impresario in the history of jazz." Granz is also known for his anti-racist position and for integrating audiences.
Born in Los Angeles, he is the son of Jewish immigrants from Tiraspol, After school, he began work as a stock clerk on the Los Angeles stock exchange. When America joined the Second World War, he was drafted into the US Army Air Force. Subsequently, he was posted to the Morale branch, the department charged with troops' entertainment." He then emerged into the public view when he organised desegregated jam sessions at the Trouville Club in Los Angeles, which he later expanded when he staged a memorable concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 2, 1944, under the heading of "Jazz at the Philharmonic".

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer often referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.
After tumultuous teenage years, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country, but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Fitzgerald's rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. Taking over the band after Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start a solo career that would last essentially the rest of her life.
Signed with manager and Savoy co-founder Moe Gale from early in her career, she eventually gave managerial control for her performance and recording career to Norman Granz, who built up the label Verve Records based in part on Fitzgerald's vocal abilities. With Verve she recorded some of her more widely noted works, particularly her interpretation of the Great American Songbook.

When Joe Pass recorded and released this first of his Virtuoso series of albums, he was 44 years old, and ready to reclaim his crown as king of jazz guitar after years of heroin abuse. As a solo artist playing only acoustic guitar in an amplified fusion era, the odds were stacked against him, but Pass boldly issued this, his most creative and improvisation-based work, to mass critical acclaim and widespread general public sales. The genius of Pass was that he was easily able to retain melodic lines of these standards while adding stretched-out, extrapolated thoughts on the top and bottom of the melodies. On every track, with each passing phrase, modified and extended line or poetic thought, Pass proves his unique style is better than all the rest. On the marvelous "Night & Day," classical-...

''Topsy:This One's for Basie'' is an album by American jazz group the Modern Jazz Quartet featuring performances recorded in 1985 and released on the Pablo label. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Despite the title of this CD, the music on this 1985 studio set from The Modern Jazz Quartet is not a program of Count Basie tunes (with the exception of "Topsy") although Basie apparently liked the John Lewis composition "D and E." The other unrelated music is highlighted by an unaccompanied feature for vibraphonist Milt Jackson ("Nature Boy"), "Reunion Blues" and three more complex pieces from pianist John Lewis. Overall this CD gives listeners a fine example of the music of The MJQ during the 1980s...(AllMusic) _____________________...

This is rarely heard interview with Lady Day in Toronto, Canada in 1952. She talks about a number of different things, including the "good old days" with Teddy Wilson and Artie Shaw, her recent 22 sides she made for Norman Granz and how her and Granz were planning on doing albums with strings dedicated to songwriters such as Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Cole Porter (sound familiar?), Toronto, actually Montreal, hometown boy Oscar Peterson, and her plans on going to Europe. Hope you guys enjoy the interview!

When Oscar Peterson appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival in '77 he played with both Ray Brown and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. This performance was later released as the live album "Oscar Peterson and the Bassists -- Montreux '77" and the dvd "Norman Granz - Jazz In Montreux Presents: Oscar Peterson Trio '77". In an interview held on June 17th 2004 in New York, Niels-Henning tells us the events which led up to this particular performance. Aside from providing interesting information on what goes on behind the scenes in jazz history, it is also the only video footage of a NHØP interview that I know of.
