'Gogglebox' couple slam MAFS as a 'mockery' of marriage

Amy Lyall |

The couple of 17 years are clearly not happy about the controversial reality show.

Wayne and Tom are one of our favourite Gogglebox families and while they love TV there’s one show they can’t stand.

They’ve been together for 17 years, raised three children together and despite being engaged they can’t get married. So it’s no surprise the couple are not fans of reality show Married At First Sight.

“For both of us it’s a complete mockery of the fact that Tom and I love each other dearly, we’ve been together for 17 years and we can’t get married,” Wayne explained to Kidspot.

“Yet, you’ve got these quasi-people that are supposedly married but they’re not married at all and just making a complete mockery out of what marriage is altogether.”

Fiance Tom agrees: “Then they started swapping couples and that one’s going off with this one and this one’s with the other girl and I’m thinking ‘man are we watching Married At First Sight or how to make an orgy?’”

They did get behind one relationship show, but for different reasons

While MAFS is a definite no-no, they did enjoy Bride and Prejudice, which struck an emotional chord with a lot of Australia as Chris struggled to get his parents to accept his relationship with another man, Grant.

“We did watch Bride and Prejudice, but we should say, out of all these silly Marriage Show’s this one actually has a story behind it and I think it is showing that people are still worried about who they’re going to marry,” Tom explained.

The idea of Chris’ parents turning their back on him is one that they really struggled to accept as fathers themselves.

“How a parent could turn their back on their own child is just dumbfounding,” said Wayne.

“You know there’s things that our kids, decisions that they’ve made that they wanted to do that we haven’t agreed to at all, but you know we have to be there to support them and if things don’t work out you’re there to pick up the pieces,” He added.

They’re just normal people who watch TV, not celebrities

Tom doesn’t like when people refer to them as ‘celebrities’ because he thinks they’re just normal people that watch TV and a camera happens to be in the room and their sexuality shouldn’t matter.

“We’re like normal people with children and we’ve bought our kids up and all that and I think it’s showing regional Australia that we are normal, just because we’re gay with children, we’re no different to everyone else we care about our kids, we like to have a drink, we like to watch a bit of TV we’re just like everyone else,” he said.

Wayne echoed that and added: “We’re normalising a stereotype that in this day and age shouldn’t be the way that it is.”

They’ve raised three children who are now 27, 26 and 23 but admitted the kids were a bit nervous about them going on the show in case they said something embarrassing.

But the tables have turned and Tom joked that they’re pretty sure their son has said his dads are on TV as a  pick-up line.
