Matt Corby

Matthew John Corby (born 7 November 1990) is an Australian singer-songwriter. He achieved his commercial breakthrough with his fourth EP, Into the Flame (2011), which peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart and by April 2012, was certified 6× Platinum by ARIA. His 2011 single "Brother" and his 2013 single "Resolution" both won ARIA Music Awards for Song of the Year.

Early life and career beginnings

Matthew John Corby was born on 7 November 1990 and raised in Oyster Bay, New South Wales.

Corby attended Inaburra School in Bangor, New South Wales. There, he was involved in the school stage band and the school choir.

Career

2007: Australian Idol

At age 16, Corby auditioned for the fifth season of Australian Idol, where he finished as runner-up.

2009–early 2011: Song For... EP

On 5 June 2009, Corby independently released his debut extended play, Song For..., on Scorpio Music. He then relocated to London and was signed with the indie label Communion by the label's owner, Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons fame. Corby has been compared to Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. On 28 May 2010, Corby's second EP, My False, was issued by Communion. On 20 October, after recording with Ian Grimble (The Libertines, Seasick Steve) and released his third EP, Transition to Colour. From late 2010 to early 2011, Corby played numerous live shows in London and in February, he performed at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. He returned to Australia to play 'Secret Garden' shows in fans' backyards throughout the country. In July, he supported UK band Elbow on their tour of Splendour sideshows.

Corby is a town and borough located in the county of Northamptonshire, England.

It is located 23 miles (37 km) north-east of the county town, Northampton. The borough had a population of 61,300 at the 2011 Census. Figures released in March 2010 revealed that Corby has the fastest growing population in both Northamptonshire and the whole of England. The Borough of Corby borders onto the Borough of Kettering, the District of East Northamptonshire, the District of Harborough and the unitary authority county of Rutland. The town was at one time known locally as "Little Scotland" due to the large number of Scottish migrant workers who came to Corby for its steelworks. Recently, Corby has undergone a large regeneration process with the opening of Corby railway station and Corby International Pool in 2009 and the Corby Cube Building opening in 2010. This is home to Corby Borough Council and is a large 450 seat theatre.

The Borough of Corby consists of the town of Corby, as well as the villages of Weldon, Rockingham, Gretton, Cottingham, Middleton, East Carlton, Stanion and Little Stanion.

Like a Version

Like a Version is a weekly segment on the Australian radio station Triple J. It involves Australian and international artists playing live in the Triple J studio, typically performing one of their own songs and then a cover version, hence the name of the segment. The title is wordplay on Like a Virgin.

It was created by Mel Bampton as part of the Mel in the Morning program. The segment was later moved to Robbie Buck's Drive program, and then to the Breakfast Show. Due to the intimate nature of the studio, the performance is often acoustic or otherwise stripped-back, however some bands have stretched this concept. The segment has grown in popularity over the years, leading to the release of compilation CDs featuring the best covers. Some particularly well-received covers have also made it into the Triple J Hottest 100. All Like a Version performances are filmed by Triple J and are made available on the Triple J website and YouTube channel.

Like a Version is comparable to BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and Irish Today FM's Even Better Than the Real Thing.

Made of Stone

"Made of Stone" is a single from The Stone Roses' eponymous debut album. Jackson Pollock is referenced (along with his work No. 5, 1948) in the B-side "Going Down" in the line "Passion looks like a painting, Jackson Pollock's No. 5".

Pollock's paintings influenced the cover art that guitarist John Squire did for the album, as well as the band's musical instruments.

The band made their début on national British TV by performing this song on BBC's cultural show The Late Show in September 1989. The power went out 60 seconds into the song and Ian Brown walked off shouting "amateurs...amateurs...we're wasting our time here lads".

The song was used during some of the road trip scenes in the 1997 American film, Heaven or Vegas. Also in the PSP 2005 videogame World Tour Soccer

The B-side "Guernica" (the title references Pablo Picasso's Guernica) is "Made of Stone" in reverse, but with unrelated lyrics.

John Squire said: "'Made of Stone' about making a wish and watching it happen. Like scoring a goal in a Cup final...on a Harley Electra Glide...dressed as Spider-Man".
