It’s hard to think of any drug prevention strategy more effective than simply being exposed to a real drug addict. Witnessing the degradation and deterioration of a drug abuser whose addiction has taken its toll offers a first-hand perspective on just how powerless certain people are against the potent sway of heavy drugs, not to mention the toll that they take on the body.
In 2014, drug treatment assistance website Rehabs.com put together a graphic, stunning compilation of photos that captured the physical regression of chronic drug abusers through their head shots. This rather pointed effort, which gathered the mug shots of those arrested multiple times for drug- and/or drug-related offenses, served to highlight the potentially catastrophic health effects of drug abuse in a raw, visceral and impactful manner. Physical changes seen through these images include skin lesions, decayed or missing teeth, open sores and premature aging, among other noticeable symptoms. It is important to note that not all of the deterioration and facial change seen within these people is necessarily the cause of drug use, but illicit substances have surely assumed at least some responsibility for the visible toll taken on these 10 individuals.
The Rehabs.com webpage aimed to serve as a source of education and inspiration, not only for those who came upon it but also for the addicts featured on the site. Lest anyone feel that the images are being used to shame, embarrass or exploit those in need of help, the website includes a disclaimer that not only invites users to request the removal of their photo, but also offers financial assistance for those seeking treatment. It also acknowledges that the images shown represent only the most extreme cases of drug abuse, but makes sure to mention that those featured in the images likely never anticipated such a slippery slope towards extreme addiction.
The statistics on drug abuse are pretty stunning. In 2013, over 24 million people reported that they had taken illicit drugs or abused prescription medication in just the past month alone. One year earlier, more than 1.7 million people had been admitted into treatment programs for substance abuse. While certainly representing a staggering number, that doesn’t address the vast majority of drug users in need of help. And although statistics can be impactful in their own right, the personal cost of drug abuse is probably best represented in the faces of those most affected by it.
Different drugs carry their own common side effects. Meth is known to cause facial wasting and open sores, cocaine can be an appetite suppressant and lead to weight loss, ecstasy often causes teeth grinding and even marijuana can age and pale the skin over time with excessive use. But even more than the symptoms of any one drug, the most damaging impact of substance abuse might be the mental side of the addiction, where recreating that high becomes a driving force in the addict’s life and leads to self-neglect. These 10 addicts wear the heavy cost of their drug abuse on their faces, plain for anyone to see.

Rocker Pete Doherty’s music career has taken a backseat to his highly-publicized drug addiction. The Libertine’s frontman has been arrested for various drug offenses, including driving under the influence, and possession of crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine. The singer completed his last rehab stint in 2015, but his addiction has clearly taken a toll on his life and his appearance. His gaunt frame and severely yellowed teeth should serve as a reminder that drug addiction has harrowing effects on the human body.
Repeated and unsuccessful drug rehab stints seem to be a common theme for many celebrities who just can’t kick their drug habits. Whitney Houston reportedly entered rehab following the airing of her reality show Being Bobby Brown. The singer was never able to kick her habit, and her unusual and drugged-out appearance was the main topic in gossip magazines. During an interview with Diane Sawyer, Whitney admitted drugs were an issue for her in the past, but she had moved on from her addiction. But when she was found dead in a hotel bathtub, the truth was revealed. Cocaine was found in her system, and drug paraphernalia was strewn across her hotel room. Sadly for fans of the singer, her life and career is still tarnished by her drug use and untimely death.
Heath Ledger also had an unsuccessful rehab stint prior to his death. The actor wanted to kick his drug habit prior to filming The Dark Knight, but his attempt was unsuccessful. He was found dead in his Manhattan apartment, and the coroner found a lethal mix of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine in his system. Fans were shocked to hear that drugs were the cause of his death.
Although drugs have been the reason behind many celebrity deaths, many stars get a new lease on life. NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel back in October 2015, but medical personnel were able to bring him back to life. He was sent to a Los Angeles hospital where he underwent therapy to help restore his memory and to help him kick his habit. But Lamar’s addiction has other plans for him. It has since been reported that he is back on crack, and his ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian, has left him once and for all.
When our favorite stars battle with drug addiction, we have no choice but to sit back and watch as they spiral out of control. This list of 10 celebrities who have been ruined by drugs is a testament to the amount of damage drugs can do to one’s life and career.

The pressure of life in the public eye, coupled with the ever-plentiful nature of substances that are readily available to those that can afford them, have made for a deadly cocktail on more than one occasion when it comes to Hollywood stars. For celebrities, as with anyone else, addiction is a serious, chronic and debilitating illness that can prove to be extremely difficult to treat, not to mention recover from.
It certainly can’t help that there is an enhanced level of scrutiny and attention placed on those within the public eye. While addiction can make its mark on anyone and doesn’t discriminate based on social status, celebs face the additional unique challenges of fame, stardom, wealth and the constant pressure to perform and uphold a carefully cultivated public image. For those that do choose to cope with the pressures of fame by turning to drugs, it can also be a slippery slope that proves difficult to avoid. For one thing, there is the typical presence of representative glad-handlers who will be reluctant to offer any words of sobering truth to their cash cow. Then there’s also the demanding schedule commitments that could make seeking help and pursuing rehabilitation seem like inconvenient afterthoughts.
There may be another facet of celebrity that lends itself to a more addictive frame of mind. Those who develop drug habits often do so seeking a level of thrill and excitement that they are otherwise unable to achieve. This thrill-seeking mindset seems at least somewhat connected to the drive of entertainers who can use the dynamic, explosive environment of the stage or screen to play out their own desires for exhilaration. Celebrity drug counselor Dr. Drew Pinsky subscribes to this theory, believing that some people are genetically wired to pursue an excitable environment, with both drugs and widely watched performance art serving as plausible outlets for that.
The possible explanations for the outsized relationship between celebrities and drug addiction doesn’t offer much comfort in light of a steady slew of young stars that drugs have taken prematurely in recent years. In just the past half decade, drugs have contributed to the untimely deaths of actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cory Monteith and musicians like Amy Winehouse and Chris Kelly while serving as a possible contributing factor in countless other passings. The drug-related death of a celebrity is no more or less tragic than that of a less famous fellow human, but the publicity generated from a star’s struggles with substance abuse can shine light on a still-rampant issue in a unique and potentially effective way.
While so many dealing with drug problems may suffer in silence, the intense scrutiny attached to celebrities has provided a better understanding of just how things fell apart for certain drug-addicted entertainment icons. With that in mind, here are the incredible, harrowing stories of 10 celebrities whose careers and lives were derailed on account of their drug addictions.

Heroin
Heroin is an opioid painkiller and the 3,6-diacetyl ester of morphine. Heroin is prescribed as an analgesic, cough suppressant and as an antidiarrhoeal. It is also used as a recreational drug for its euphoric effects. Frequent and regular administration is associated with tolerance and physical dependence. In some countries it is available for prescription to long-term users as a form of opioid replacement therapy alongside counseling.
It was originally synthesized by C. R. Alder Wright in 1874 by adding two acetyl groups to the molecule morphine, a natural product of the opium poppy. Internationally, heroin is controlled under Schedules I and IV of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It is generally illegal to manufacture, possess, or sell heroin without a license. In 2004, Afghanistan produced roughly 87% of the world supply in illicit raw opium. However, the production rate in Mexico rose sixfold from 2007 to 2011, making Mexico the second largest opium producer in the world.

Witnessing the degradation and deterioration of a drug abuser whose addiction has taken its toll offers a first-hand perspective on just how powerless certain people are against the potent sway of heavy drugs, not to mention the toll that they take on the body. In 2014, drug treatment assistance website Rehabs.com put together a graphic, stunning compilation of photos that captured the physical regression of chronic drug abusers through their head shots. This rather pointed effort, which gathered the mug shots of those arrested multiple times for drug- and/or drug-related offenses, served to highlight the potentially catastrophic health effects of drug abuse in a raw, visceral and impactful manner. Physical changes seen through these images include skin lesions, decayed or missing teeth, open sores and premature aging, among other noticeable symptoms. It is important to note that not all of the deterioration and facial change seen within these people is necessarily the cause of drug use, but illicit substances have surely assumed at least some responsibility for the visible toll taken on these 10 individuals. The Rehabs.com webpage aimed to serve as a source of education and inspiration, not only for those who came upon it but also for the addicts featured on the site. Lest anyone feel that the images are being used to shame, embarrass or exploit those in need of help, the website includes a disclaimer that not only invites users to request the removal of their photo, but also offers financial assistance for those seeking treatment. It also acknowledges that the images shown represent only the most extreme cases of drug abuse, but makes sure to mention that those featured in the images likely never anticipated such a slippery slope towards extreme addiction. The statistics on drug abuse are pretty stunning. In 2013, over 24 million people reported that they had taken illicit drugs or abused prescription medication in just the past month alone. One year earlier, more than 1.7 million people had been admitted into treatment programs for substance abuse. While certainly representing a staggering number, that doesn’t address the vast majority of drug users in need of help. And although statistics can be impactful in their own right, the personal cost of drug abuse is probably best represented in the faces of those most affected by it. Different drugs carry their own common side effects. Meth is known to cause facial wasting and open sores, cocaine can be an appetite suppressant and lead to weight loss, ecstasy often causes teeth grinding and even marijuana can age and pale the skin over time with excessive use. But even more than the symptoms of any one drug, the most damaging impact of substance abuse might be the mental side of the addiction, where recreating that high becomes a driving force in the addict’s life and leads to self-neglect. During an interview with Diane Sawyer, Whitney admitted drugs were an issue for her in the past, but she had moved on from her addiction. But when she was found dead in a hotel bathtub, the truth was revealed. Cocaine was found in her system, and drug paraphernalia was strewn across her hotel room. Sadly for fans of the singer, her life and career is still tarnished by her drug use and untimely death. Heath Ledger also had an unsuccessful rehab stint prior to his death. The actor wanted to kick his drug habit prior to filming The Dark Knight, but his attempt was unsuccessful. He was found dead in his Manhattan apartment, and the coroner found a lethal mix of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine in his system. Fans were shocked to hear that drugs were the cause of his death. Although drugs have been the reason behind many celebrity deaths, many stars get a new lease on life. NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel back in October 2015, but medical personnel were able to bring him back to life. He was sent to a Los Angeles hospital where he underwent therapy to help restore his memory and to help him kick his habit. But Lamar’s addiction has other plans for him. It has since been reported that he is back on crack, and his ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian, has left him once and for all. Those who develop drug habits often do so seeking a level of thrill and excitement that they are otherwise unable to achieve. This thrill-seeking mindset seems at least somewhat connected to the drive of entertainers who can use the dynamic, explosive environment of the stage or screen to play out their own desires for exhilaration. Celebrity drug counselor Dr. Drew Pinsky subscribes to this theory, believing that some people are genetically wired to pursue an excitable environment, with both drugs and widely watched performance art serving as plausible outlets for that. The possible explanations for the outsized relationship between celebrities and drug addiction doesn’t offer much comfort in light of a steady slew of young stars that drugs have taken prematurely in recent years. In just the past half decade, drugs have contributed to the untimely deaths of actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cory Monteith and musicians like Amy Winehouse and Chris Kelly while serving as a possible contributing factor in countless other passings. The drug-related death of a celebrity is no more or less tragic than that of a less famous fellow human, but the publicity generated from a star’s struggles with substance abuse can shine light on a still-rampant issue in a unique and potentially effective way. Physical changes seen through these images include skin lesions, decayed or missing teeth, open sores and premature aging, among other noticeable symptoms. It is important to note that not all of the deterioration and facial change seen within these people is necessarily the cause of drug use, but illicit substances have surely assumed at least some responsibility for the visible toll taken on these 10 individuals.
The Rehabs.com webpage aimed to serve as a source of education and inspiration, not only for those who came upon it but also for the addicts featured on the site. Lest anyone feel that the images are being used to shame, embarrass or exploit those in need of help, the website includes a disclaimer that not only invites users to request the removal of their photo, but also offers financial assistance for those seeking treatment. It also acknowledges that the images shown represent only the most extreme cases of drug abuse, but makes sure to mention that those featured in the images likely never anticipated such a slippery slope towards extreme addiction.
The statistics on drug abuse are pretty stunning. In 2013, over 24 million people reported that they had taken illicit drugs or abused prescription medication in just the past month alone. One year earlier, more than 1.7 million people had been admitted into treatment programs for substance abuse. While certainly representing a staggering number, that doesn’t address the vast majority of drug users in need of help. And although statistics can be impactful in their own right, the personal cost of drug abuse is probably best represented in the faces of those most affected by it.
Different drugs carry their own common side effects. Meth is known to cause facial wasting and open sores, cocaine can be an appetite suppressant and lead to weight loss, ecstasy often causes teeth grinding and even marijuana can age and pale the skin over time with excessive use. But even more than the symptoms of any one drug, the most damaging impact of substance abuse might be the mental side of the addiction, where recreating that high becomes a driving force in the addict’s life and leads to self-neglect. These 10 addicts wear the heavy cost of their drug abuse on their faces, plain for anyone to see.

Repeated and unsuccessful drug rehab stints seem to be a common theme for many celebrities who just can’t kick their drug habits. Whitney Houston reportedly entered rehab following the airing of her reality show Being Bobby Brown. The singer was never able to kick her habit, and her unusual and drugged-out appearance was the main topic in gossip magazines. During an interview with Diane Sawyer, Whitney admitted drugs were an issue for her in the past, but she had moved on from her addiction. But when she was found dead in a hotel bathtub, the truth was revealed. Cocaine was found in her system, and drug paraphernalia was strewn across her hotel room. Sadly for fans of the singer, her life and career is still tarnished by her drug use and untimely death.
Heath Ledger also had an unsuccessful rehab stint prior to his death. The actor wanted to kick his drug habit prior to filming The Dark Knight, but his attempt was unsuccessful. He was found dead in his Manhattan apartment, and the coroner found a lethal mix of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine in his system. Fans were shocked to hear that drugs were the cause of his death.
Although drugs have been the reason behind many celebrity deaths, many stars get a new lease on life. NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel back in October 2015, but medical personnel were able to bring him back to life. He was sent to a Los Angeles hospital where he underwent therapy to help restore his memory and to help him kick his habit. But Lamar’s addiction has other plans for him. It has since been reported that he is back on crack, and his ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian, has left him once and for all.

It certainly can’t help that there is an enhanced level of scrutiny and attention placed on those within the public eye. While addiction can make its mark on anyone and doesn’t discriminate based on social status, celebs face the additional unique challenges of fame, stardom, wealth and the constant pressure to perform and uphold a carefully cultivated public image. For those that do choose to cope with the pressures of fame by turning to drugs, it can also be a slippery slope that proves difficult to avoid. For one thing, there is the typical presence of representative glad-handlers who will be reluctant to offer any words of sobering truth to their cash cow. Then there’s also the demanding schedule commitments that could make seeking help and pursuing rehabilitation seem like inconvenient afterthoughts.
There may be another facet of celebrity that lends itself to a more addictive frame of mind. Those who develop drug habits often do so seeking a level of thrill and excitement that they are otherwise unable to achieve. This thrill-seeking mindset seems at least somewhat connected to the drive of entertainers who can use the dynamic, explosive environment of the stage or screen to play out their own desires for exhilaration. Celebrity drug counselor Dr. Drew Pinsky subscribes to this theory, believing that some people are genetically wired to pursue an excitable environment, with both drugs and widely watched performance art serving as plausible outlets for that.
The possible explanations for the outsized relationship between celebrities and drug addiction doesn’t offer much comfort in light of a steady slew of young stars that drugs have taken prematurely in recent years. In just the past half decade, drugs have contributed to the untimely deaths of actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cory Monteith and musicians like Amy Winehouse and Chris Kelly while serving as a possible contributing factor in countless other passings. The drug-related death of a celebrity is no more or less tragic than that of a less famous fellow human, but the publicity generated from a star’s struggles with substance abuse can shine light on a still-rampant issue in a unique and potentially effective way.

There seems to be an all too strong and unfortunate correlation between celebrity and drug culture. The pressure of life in the public eye, coupled with the ever-plentiful nature of substances that are readily available to those that can afford them, have made for a deadly cocktail on more than one occasion when it comes to Hollywood stars. For celebrities, as with anyone else, addiction is a serious, chronic and debilitating illness that can prove to be extremely difficult to treat, not to mention recover from.
It certainly can’t help that there is an enhanced level of scrutiny and attention placed on those within the public eye. While addiction can make its mark on anyone and doesn’t discriminate based on social status, celebs face the additional unique challenges of fame, stardom, wealth and the constant pressure to perform and uphold a carefully cultivated public image. For those that do choose to cope with the pressures of fame by turning to drugs, it can also be a slippery slope that proves difficult to avoid. For one thing, there is the typical presence of representative glad-handlers who will be reluctant to offer any words of sobering truth to their cash cow. Then there’s also the demanding schedule commitments that could make seeking help and pursuing rehabilitation seem like inconvenient afterthoughts.
There may be another facet of celebrity that lends itself to a more addictive frame of mind. Those who develop drug habits often do so seeking a level of thrill and excitement that they are otherwise unable to achieve. This thrill-seeking mindset seems at least somewhat connected to the drive of entertainers who can use the dynamic, explosive environment of the stage or screen to play out their own desires for exhilaration. Celebrity drug counselor Dr. Drew Pinsky subscribes to this theory, believing that some people are genetically wired to pursue an excitable environment, with both drugs and widely watched performance art serving as plausible outlets for that.
The possible explanations for the outsized relationship between celebrities and drug addiction doesn’t offer much comfort in light of a steady slew of young stars that drugs have taken prematurely in recent years. In just the past half decade, drugs have contributed to the untimely deaths of actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cory Monteith and musicians like Amy Winehouse and Chris Kelly while serving as a possible contributing factor in countless other passings. The drug-related death of a celebrity is no more or less tragic than that of a less famous fellow human, but the publicity generated from a star’s struggles with substance abuse can shine light on a still-rampant issue in a unique and potentially effective way.
While so many dealing with drug problems may suffer in silence, the intense scrutiny attached to celebrities has provided a better understanding of just how things fell apart for certain drug-addicted entertainment icons.
