Porochista Khakpour was born in Tehran and raised in the Los Angeles area. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence, she attended the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars MA program. She has been awarded fellowships from Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, the Sewanee Writers Conference, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Yaddo. Her 2007 book, Sons and Other Flammable Objects, was a New York Times Editors Choice and earned the California Book Award for first fiction.

Im Janner 1926, kurz nach Babels Fruhstadium im Genesungsprozess trifft
Zacharias wahrend einer Zugreise suf einen schrulligen und verworrenen
alten Mann, der sich ihm als "Der Essayist" vorstellte. Der Mann hatte ihn
schon langereZeit beobachtet - starr sein Blick, zu grob seine Augen - und
bat schlieblich, zu grob seine Augen - und bat schlieblich mit einem
eindeutigen Wink zur momentanen Geselligkeit. Der Literat, der sich in der
Tat wie ein Bettler in die Sitzpolsterung kauerte, erwies sich sehr bald
als augergewohnlicher Zuhorer und Mataphorist. Zacharias wirkte erst
verstort, der Essayist durchstrahlte seinen Wuchs, stoberte immerzu nach
Sorgen und Gedanken. Sie sprachen uber Zar Nikolaus II, die Kriegsjahre,
das Fabulieren und Schriftstellern, Kriegsjahre, das Fabulieren und
Schriftsellern, uber die Darbietung der Augen, deren Gestandnis, Sorge zu
tragen oder nicht, und schlussendlich ausschlieblich uber die Prasenz des
ungeliebten Kammerfriedens. Zacharias erzahtle von seinem Schachspiel und
beichtete dem Mann das Leid seines Bruders und die Konsequenz fur Paschas
Schachtheorie. Die Begegenung erfahrt zunehmend Brisanz, als der Essayist
beginnt, vom idealen "Ort der Stille" zu schildern und Zacharias ein
anmutigues Angebot unterbreitet. "Horen Sie, Zacharias Kasakow, ich kenne
einen Ort und es ist einzige in diesem Land, an dem man sie Stille besiegt,
ohne sie storend empfunden zu haben. Es ist ein Flecken von Hain und
Wasserrauschen, nur klein ist die Flache des Humus, in der die Stille etwas
zahlt, grob genug jedoch, main Freund, um ein Schachbrett abzustellen!" Im
Spab einigen sich die beiden, dass der Essayist das Grundstuck "verkaufen"
und daher preisgeben wurde, hatte Zacharias 2 Millionen Rubel in Gewahrsam.
Dann, noch wqahrend Zacharias in wohlverdienten Schlaf verfiel, verlasst
der Mann das Abteil (und damit den Zug). 4 Monate spatter erhalt Zacharias,
inzwischen politisch ambitioniert, einen versiegelten brief, er riss diesen
entzwei und... vernahm den Tod von Wassily Kalitenkov (der sich selbst gerne
als der "Essayist" preisgab). "Ich will es einen gewissen Zacharias
Kasakow, wohnhaft in Moskau, Kalininprospekt 89, ermoglichen, einen Platz
zu erben, fer mir selbst nicht gehort, doch auch niemanden sonst".
Zacharias - ergriffen von seinem Erbe - suchte nach dem Land, fand dort den
Grabstein des Essaysten und nutzte die Stille - emsig und entschlossen - um
als erster Schachspieler Russlands Paschas Schachlehre vollend umzusetzen.

College of the University of Chicago
The College of the University of Chicago is the university's sole undergraduate institution and one of its oldest components, emerging contemporaneously with the university at large in 1892. Instruction is provided by faculty from across all graduate divisions and schools for its 5100 students; however, the College retains a select group of young, proprietary scholars who teach its core curriculum offerings. Unlike many major American research universities, the College is small in comparison to the University's graduate divisions, with graduate students outnumbering undergraduates at a 2:1 ratio. The College is most notable for its core curriculum pioneered by Robert Maynard Hutchins, which remains the most expansive amongst highly ranked American colleges, as well as its emphasis on preparing students for continued graduate study; 85% of graduates go onto graduate study within 5 years of graduation, which is higher than any other school, and around 15-20% of graduates go on to receive PhDs.

alten Mann, der sich ihm als "Der Essayist" vorstellte. Der Mann hatte ihn

eindeutigen Wink zur momentanen Geselligkeit. Der Literat, der sich in der
Tat wie ein Bettler in die Sitzpolsterung kauerte, erwies sich sehr bald
als augergewohnlicher Zuhorer und Mataphorist. Zacharias wirkte erst
verstort, der Essayist durchstrahlte seinen Wuchs, stoberte immerzu nach
Sorgen und Gedanken. Sie sprachen uber Zar Nikolaus II, die Kriegsjahre,
das Fabulieren und Schriftstellern, Kriegsjahre, das Fabulieren und
Schriftsellern, uber die Darbietung der Augen, deren Gestandnis, Sorge zu

anmutigues Angebot unterbreitet. "Horen Sie, Zacharias Kasakow, ich kenne
einen Ort und es ist einzige in diesem Land, an dem man sie Stille besiegt,
ohne sie storend empfunden zu haben. Es ist ein Flecken von Hain und
Wasserrauschen, nur klein ist die Flache des Humus, in der die Stille etwas
zahlt, grob genug jedoch, main Freund, um ein Schachbrett abzustellen!" Im
Spab einigen sich die beiden, dass der Essayist das Grundstuck "verkaufen"
und daher preisgeben wurde, hatte Zacharias 2 Millionen Rubel in Gewahrsam.
Dann, noch wqahrend Zacharias in wohlverdienten Schlaf verfiel, verlasst
der Mann das Abteil (und damit den Zug). 4 Monate spatter erhalt Zacharias,
inzwischen politisch ambitioniert, einen versiegelten brief, er riss diesen
entzwei und... vernahm den Tod von Wassily Kalitenkov (der sich selbst gerne
als der "Essayist" preisgab). "Ich will es einen gewissen Zacharias
Kasakow, wohnhaft in Moskau, Kalininprospekt 89, ermoglichen, einen Platz
zu erben, fer mir selbst nicht gehort, doch auch niemanden sonst".
