A man is in custody after the body of a former Special Operations Group police officer was found in a factory in Melbourne's south-east.

Police made the grim find just before 10am on Friday at a commercial property on Governor Road in Braeside after they were called to make checks.

Fairfax Media understands the man is a former member of Victoria Police's elite Special Operations Group. It is believed the 41-year-old man, who held the rank of senior constable, retired in 2010 after being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder.

It is unclear at this stage if the death is being treated as suspicious, however a Victoria Police spokesperson said homicide squad detectives were at the scene.

A 45-year-old man handed himself into the Mordialloc Police Station early on Friday morning. This led to the discovery of the ex-police officer's body inside a factory of Governor Road.
