John Weldon Cale (December 5, 1938 – July 26, 2013), professionally known as J.J. Cale, was an American singer-songwriter, recording artist and influential guitar stylist. Though he deliberately avoided the limelight (being temperamentally averse to celebrity) his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton who described him as “one of the most important artists in the history of rock”. He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz.
Many songs written by Cale have been recorded by other artists, including "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton; "Call Me the Breeze" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Mayer, Johnny Cash and Bobby Bare; "Clyde" by Waylon Jennings and Dr. Hook; "I Got The Same Old Blues" by Captain Beefheart, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Freddie King; and "Magnolia" by Beck, Lucinda Williams and Iron and Wine Jose Feliciano and Ben Bridwell.
JJ or jj may refer to:
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009.
In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of JJ Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which featured in his Unplugged album.

We lost another great musician / performer / songwriter on Friday July 26th, 2013! JJ Cale passed away this past Friday. Man, talk about hard hitting! I feel like I lost a family member! I grew up with this man and his music. I've spent many hours listening to his music over the last 35+ years and I have many good memories from times in my life that were influenced by his music. This guy had so many hits, you couldn't count them all using all your appendages. JJ, you will be greatly missed by the whole world! R.I.P. brother! So I dug through the archives yesterday as soon as I heard the disturbing news and found a nice show that I think will help preserve his memory and many great songs. I was up all night and had problems with the original conversion, then did a second conversion ...

My tribute to the late JJ Cale here on YouTube is this rare concert and interview from 1990. I have attempted to clean up both the sound and picture from the original VHS recording. RIP John Weldon Cale. (December 5, 1938 -- July 26, 2013)
This animated Op-Doc explores why J.J. Cale, who wrote such classic songs as "After Midnight," "Cocaine" and "Call Me the Breeze," never achieved stardom. That's really them folks. Just trying to share my true story.
Hey baby, it's your time now
Hey baby, you made it somehow
Don't let nobody come and bring you down
Hey baby, you've got 'em on the run
You know, you've got 'em on the run
I know you, you have just begun
When you came into my life
My love, I thought I would die
There's never been nobody like you
You take away these blues
Hey baby, you're looking real good
You know, you're looking real good
You make the day a song like I knew you would
When you came into my life Lord, I thought I would die
I never met nobody like you
