Space policy is the political decision-making process for, and application of, public policy of a state (or association of states) regarding spaceflight and uses of outer space, both for civilian (scientific and commercial) and military purposes. International treaties, such as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, attempt to maximize the peaceful uses of space and restrict the militarization of space.
Space policy intersects with science policy, since national space programs often perform or fund research in space science, and also with defense policy, for applications such as spy satellites and anti-satellite weapons. It also encompasses government regulation of third-party activities such as commercial communications satellites and private spaceflight.
Space policy also encompasses the creation and application of space law, and space advocacy organizations exist to support the cause of space exploration.
Space law is an area of the law that encompasses national and international law governing activities in outer space. There are currently five treaties that make up the body of international space law.

Professor Ella Atkins, Aerospace Engineering, will be giving a seminar to the Aerospace Department about FAA regulations and UAV’s. Professor Atkins' research program focuses on the integration of strategic and tactical planning and optimization algorithms to enable robust, autonomous aircraft and spacecraft flight in the presence of system failures and environmental uncertainties. Onboard automation must enhance performance while maintaining safe long-term operation robust to unexpected or failure scenarios. Mission and trajectory planners must yield acceptable low-cost solutions for single vehicles or coordinated teams operating nominally or, worst-case, in unfriendly, uncertain environments with degraded performance characteristics. Researchers have begun to speak of humans "on the loop...
At the 2012 International Space Development Conference in Washington, D.C., XCOR Aerospace CEO Jeff Greason gives an important space policy speech, titled "The 20 Year Plan". The eloquent and brilliant speech was about commercial space and how to create viable space settlement. Mr. Greason argues that it is past time for the central planning of all space exploration efforts, that we can only be successful if we create the conditions that allow individuals, free people, to own the assets (labor and capital) that not only allow for subsistence, but for excess capacity, for success and failure. It is this excess capacity that will eventually result in wealth and trade.

Another lecture in IHMC's award winning lecture series. http://www.ihmc.us May 25, 2011 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's speech to a joint session of Congress announcing his decision to send Americans to the Moon "before this decade is out." Kennedy not only made this momentous decision just four months after becoming president; in the thirty months remaining in his tragically shortened time in the White House, he several times reviewed its wisdom, even as he approved the peaceful but war-like mobilization of resources required to achieve the goal he had set for the nation. In the months just before he was assassinated, Kennedy both proposed turning the Apollo lunar landing program into a joint effort with the Soviet Union and authorized a top-level review...

Space exploration is entering a new era. Dozens of aerospace companies have emerged in recent years, all with the goal of commercializing space as never before. From serving NASA's cargo needs to sending tourists on space vacations to mining asteroids for profit, this next generation of entrepreneurs, and not NASA, may be the ones who transform space into our backyard, possibly creating the first-ever trillionaires. Host and moderator Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, lead the 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate, Selling Space, with a panel of entrepreneurs and space historians on March . Panelists Include: Wanda M. Austin, President and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation. Austin served on President Obama's Review of Human Spaceflight Pla...
