The town of Motueka in the South Island of New Zealand lies close to the mouth of the Motueka River, on the western shore of Tasman Bay. It is, after Richmond, the second largest centre in the Tasman Region, with a population of 7125 (2006 census). The Motueka Ward had an estimated population of 10,900 at 30 June 2009.
The surrounding district has a number of orchards, as well as growing a variety of specialised crops such as hops, and formerly serving as the main centre of tobacco growing in New Zealand. A number of small vineyards have developed in recent years, one (Neudorf) gaining an international reputation.
Nearby beaches (such as Kaiteriteri Beach and Marahau) are very popular with holidaymakers, and the area around Motueka has one of the country's highest annual sunshine-hour indices.
Motueka, as one of the nearest towns to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks, has become the base of many tourism ventures in those parks, as well as in Nelson Lakes National Park, and in other recreational areas. Extensive limestone cave systems (including Harwood Hole in the Takaka Hill area north of Motueka) attract cavers and rock climbers. Sea kayaking and tramping now attract many thousands of visitors each year.
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.
Abel Janszoon Tasman (Dutch: [ˈɑbəl ˈjɑnsoːn ˈtɑsmɑn]; 1603 – 10 October 1659) was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant, best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He was the first known European explorer to reach the islands of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand, and to sight the Fiji islands.
Abel Jans Tasman was born in 1603 in Lutjegast in what is now the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. The oldest available source mentioning him dates 27 December 1631 when, as a widower living in Amsterdam, he became engaged to marry 21-year-old Jannetje Tjaers from the Jordaan district of the city. In 1633 he sailed from Texel to Batavia in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), taking the southern Brouwer Route. Tasman helped to punish the people from Seram Island who had sold spices to others than the Dutch. In August 1637 he was back in Amsterdam, and the following year he signed on for another ten years and took his wife with him to Batavia. On 25 March 1638 he tried to sell his property in the Jordaan, but the purchase was cancelled. In 1639 he was second-in-command of an exploration expedition in the north Pacific under Matthijs Quast. The fleet included the ships Engel and Gracht and reached Fort Zeelandia (Dutch Formosa) and Deshima.
The South Island or Te Waipounamu is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the smaller but more populous North Island. It is bordered to the north by Cook Strait, to the west by the Tasman Sea, and to the south and east by the Pacific Ocean. The South Island covers 150,437 square kilometres (58,084 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate climate.
As it has a 32% larger landmass than the North Island, it is sometimes referred to as the "mainland" of New Zealand, especially by South Island residents; however, only 23% of New Zealand's 4.6 million inhabitants live in the South Island. In the early stages of European (Pākehā) settlement of the country, the South Island had the majority of the European population and wealth due to the 1860s gold rushes. The North Island population overtook the South in the early 20th century, with 56% of the population living in the North in 1911, and the drift north of people and businesses continued throughout the century.

Went to New Zealand. Got control of a Pitt's Special. Flew some rolls and loops. Looked stupid. But had some fun.
Aidan, Casey, Jordan and I riding Reefton skatepark (in New Zealand). One sunny saturday roadtrip.
A video I made while working at Skydive Abel Tasman in Motueka, New Zealand. It is meant to be a trailer style for prospective jumpers to watch in order to get them to want to jump with Skydive Abel Tasman.
In December 2010, I was on a roadtrip on the South Island, in New Zealand. After a nice stay in the Nelson Region (Farewell Spit, motueka, Kaiteriteri, Abels Tasman National Park), the roadtrip continued down the West Coast and to Canterbury. On the way I saw several flooded streams and amazing rock formations. That stretch of the trip, ended in Hanmer Springs, which is a small town built around Hot Springs. The town is therefore famous for its Thermal Pools & Spa where you can relax and enjoy mineral rich, soothing waters. There are also many nice forest walks around the area, and that's where the second part of this video was filmed. Don't hesitate to give me some creative criticism. I hope you enjoy! We were going nowhere faster than you
Our engines were racing hot and our skin turning blue
Out of our skulls no sleep for a week
You could say we were major league tweeks
We were so strung out and having a blast
Part of that white trash underworld criminal class
We were running those scams, living life on the lam
Living so crazy, eye always looking out for the man
Lowlife trash, bikers and assorted riff-raff
Could you kick it down is what we used to laugh
We were so strung out and having a blast
Part of that white trash underworld criminal class
We were strung, dumb and problems we thought we had none
Generational meth lab dysfunctional kinda' fun
We were going faster nowhere than anybody else
Sure as hell wasn't good for our health
I know we just had to see how high we could fly
Just hope you made it through to the other side
We would never front you off, but could you front me and pay you back real soon
Stealing mail, cashing checks, sweating it out in the heat of noon
Snitch us out and we'll make you pay for it some day
Thick as thieves is what we used to say...
Going nowhere fast... nowhere fast... nowhere faster than you
Then sure enough you're looking out from inside a cell
Trying to figure a way out of this hell
Easy getting hooked tougher getting out
And if you make it then you got the right to sing and shout
We were so strung out and having a blast
Part of that white trash underworld criminal class
We were strung, dumb and problems we thought we had none
Generational meth lab dysfunctional kinda' fun
We were going faster nowhere than anybody else
Sure as hell wasn't good for our health
I know we just had to see how high we could fly
Just hope you made it through to the other side
We would never front you off, but could you front me and pay you back real soon
