MBFWA: The case for dressy trackpants and/or feathers

Show comments

Here are some things on my mind after the first two fashion shows at MBFWA: 1. Trackpants have become super luxe, and 2. Is there anything as glamorous as feathers?

Street style at Fashion Week Sydney

Amy Croffey chats to the most eye-catching fashionistas at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

The interesting thing about both of these items – spied at Dion Lee and Alice McCall – is that with dress codes becoming ever more, well, relaxed and open to interpretation, both would be equally appropriate at just about any event.

What this really means is that yes, there's such a thing as dress trackies (the fluid, silky ones that Dion Lee showed are a prime example), and you're just as likely to wear an entirely feathered jacket that shimmers as you walk to the shops to pick up some milk as you to the kind of event that used to warrant a feathery jacket. Like a ball. Or a movie premiere. Or your nan's bingo night.

And this breaking down of dress codes – you could definitely wear Dion Lee's trackpants to work with a shirt and a pair of heels, or Alice McCalls fripperies with their ruffles and brocade and yes, feathers with leather trousers and head out on a Tinder date without startling your conversation partner – is liberating.

Well, mostly.

We can wear pretty much anything, at any time. But does it make it easier to dress when "appropriateness" isn't so much a consideration?

Life was easier when your mum had your "good" party dress set aside for special occasions, but it was perhaps a lot less fun.

Isn't life a little more exciting when you can wear feathers as you type your sales report, or swap out black trousers for ones that swirl about your legs as you walk?

And ultimately, isn't that the best of fashion? It's about breaking down rules, and yes, wearing all of your good things all at once.

So would we wear that?

Yes. Chutzpah is vital though.

Who would wear it?

Rihanna would wear both together. For brunch with her minions.

Final takeout?

Do what Rihanna would do. Mix and match your best things with your bog standard pieces. Wear the feathers.
