Bella Hadid didn't have a wardrobe malfunction, she was prepared for one

It wouldn't be an excessively glamorous Cannes Film Festival red carpet without a very slight scandal, and doing the honours in the French Riviera this year is model Bella Hadid with what the internet has gleefully called a 'wardrobe malfunction.'

The thing is though, this was not a malfunction.

Not in the days of the 24/7, all-angle coverage. Not in the days of the Insta-famous. Oh no.

This generation of red carpet supers are ready for any situation/gust of wind and Hadid, who wore a pink Alexandre Vauthier dress with a perilously high split, was fully prepped. She coordinated her ensemble with a pair of eminently sensible beige bloomers. The kind of knickers one would wear should they be in any danger of flashing in an elegant situation.

Besides it was always going to be awfully tricky for Hadid to top the red dress that she wore to last year's festival. One that you know was scandalous because the Daily Mail described it as "THAT red dress" and Fashionista declared it to be the "nakedest" dress at Cannes.

So beige bloomers a malfunction? Hardly!

Meanwhile the proof that Susan Sarandon is getting sexier than ever is in the off-the-shoulder velvet dress (and sunglasses) she wore to sashay down the red carpet and pose with Julianne Moore. The 70-year-old actress recently starred as Bette Davis opposite Jessica Lange playing Joan Crawford in the delicious series, Feud.

Other sartorial highlights from the festivities so far include Naomie Harris looking like a bowl of sorbet with her technicolour dress, Emily Ratajkowski in liquid gunmetal silk, and Elle Fanning channelling her inner princess in a strapless and blooming Vivienne Westwood gown.

Perhaps the crown goes to It girl in the making Lily-Rose Depp however, who is as Vogue puts it "practically Gallic royalty" and opted for a chic Grecian style dress on the red carpet.
