The Mending News interviews Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan, Onondaga Council of Chiefs of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. In this segment, Oren shares on the state of Mainstream Media in the face of our current reality.
Transcript:
"My observation of the media, especially in the United States, is that its heavily controlled by business. It's called commercial television, or commercial radio. In order for you to have time on it, you have to pay for it, and they pay for it. I'm watching almost a continuous roll of one of the major extractors of oil and the big oil spill in the gulf talking about clean energy. Talking about how well they do, almost on a half hour basis. Do you know what it costs to do that? One of those ads costs a lot of money, and that's what people hear. So the truth, you rarely hear. You don't have the money to do that. So the control of the media is very severe here. So that's what your trying to do here, to get the world out to the public, and you're dealing with it and I commend you for that, and I'm quite willing to talk to you about that because I know what your mission is. And you have a powerful enemy, very very powerful, and your enemy is my enemy. And on top of that is the damage that's being done to the earth in the name of business. So business as usual is over. We cannot continue to do what we're doing without challenging our survival as a species. We're part of the natural world. We're flesh bone and blood, there's nothing exceptional about us, except that we have intellect. And with that intellect comes responsibility, and we're not acting on it. And so I go back to my first questions, how do you instruct seven billion people as to the relationship to the earth? Because if they understood their relationship, they would not be doing what they're doing. And that's the question. And so your work is moving in that direction. Indigenous people don't have all the answers. I mean things are so different now than they were in 1950, that's 63 years ago. There were only 5 billion people in the world 63 years ago, now there's over 7. And as we're talking here, it's moving towards 8. As we speak. And at the same time, the ice is melting. And they're both compounding. It's not just melting, it's accelerating, and we are not prepared for the acceleration."
