Addis Ababa (Amharic: አዲስ አበባ?Addis Abäba, IPA: [adˈdis ˈabəba], “new flower”; Oromo: Finfinne,[fɪnˈfɪ́n.nɛ́] "Natural Spring(s)"), sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. Founded in 1886, it is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated.
As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union is and its predecessor the OAU was based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.
Addis Fortune (also known as Fortune) is a private and independent newspaper based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
It is reportedly the largest English-language weekly in the country. Its circulation is often quoted at a meager 7,500 copies per week in a country with a population of 80 million. However, its rival, Capital, which is also based in Addis Ababa, recently claimed to have topped Fortune in circulation in a project launched to celebrate its ten-year anniversary. Fortune still claims to be the largest circulating paper in its category, surpassing all others in the competition by an average of 60%.
Ethiopia’s foreign currency supply available for importers and travellers alike is increasingly facing chronic shortages, claims an importer engaged in trading of household appliances from Asian countries, while opting to speak to Fortune on conditions of anonymity. As the country’s foreign exchange provision plummets into a whirlpool, the parallel or black market for hard foreign currency (which has become a rare commodity), is thriving in the country.

Travel video about destination Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monast...

A travel promo video showing a recent trip to the Horn of Africa to visit both Ethiopia and the self declared independent state of Somaliland. We traveled overland from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa visiting towns such as Dire Dawa and Harar the crossing the border into Somaliland. From here we visited Hargeisa, the capital plus the costal settlement of Berbera. The people of Somaliland have been fighting for international recognition ever since the civil war and declaration of independence in 1991. With deserted beaches, 5000 year old cave paintings and a tiny capital city full of warm friendly people, Somaliland is a extremely unique side of Africa, that is so far empty of tourists, yet full of adventure and potential!
A glimpse of life in the growing capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.
