The Amazon River (US /ˈæməzɒn/ or UK /ˈæməzən/; Spanish and Portuguese: Amazonas) in South America is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, and the second in length.
Although the Amazon's most distant source has been accepted for nearly a century as the headwaters of the Apurímac river on Nevado Mismi, a 2014 study indicates that the Amazon's most distant source is on the Cordillera Rumi Cruz at the headwaters of the Mantaro river in Peru. The Mantaro and Apurímac confluence, and with other tributaries form the Ucayali, which in turn confluences with the River Marañón upstream of Iquitos, Peru, to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon. For Brazil this section of the river is the Solimões until it confluences with the Rio Negro at the Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas) at Manaus, the river's largest city.
The Amazon averages a discharge of about 209,000 cubic metres per second (7,400,000 cu ft/s; 209,000,000 L/s; 55,000,000 USgal/s) — approximately 6,591 cubic kilometres per annum (1,581 cu mi/a) — which is greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined. The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, with an area of approximately 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi), and accounts for roughly one-fifth of the world's total river flow. The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin. The Amazon enters Brazil with only one-fifth of the flow it finally discharges into the Atlantic Ocean, yet already has a greater flow at this point than the discharge of any other river.
The Amazons are a nation of female warriors in Greek myth.
Amazon or Amazone may also refer to:
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall, with annual rainfall between 250 and 450 centimetres (98 and 177 in). There are two types of rainforest: tropical rainforest and temperate rainforest. The monsoon trough, alternatively known as the intertropical convergence zone, plays a significant role in creating the climatic conditions necessary for the Earth's tropical rainforests.
Around 40% to 75% of all biotic species are indigenous to the rainforests. It has been estimated that there may be many millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth" and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world's oxygen turnover, sometimes misnamed oxygen production, processing it through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and consuming it through respiration.

This wasn't my first rodeo on Amazon hammock boats. My first trip to South America we spent 3 weeks traveling the width of the continent all via the Amazon River Basin. It was an incredible trip and we learned a lot about life on the muddy rivers. During that time we also learned a thing or two about keeping your stuff safe so you can enjoy some piece of mind while sleeping, exploring other decks or getting off the boat at one of the numerous stops. It isn't about being paranoid, it is about 'not giving papaya' as they say in #Colombia and about being proactive instead of reactive. Here were some of our strategies, and if you have any of your own then please share them below! I'm Ivan the Intrepid, a budget travel and lifestyle blogger... person. Travel video about destination Rio Negro. A river boat journey of several days can reveal Brazil in its most natural form. Upstream along the Rio Negro into an immense jungle area and a journey into the mysterious world of the Amazon. We begin in Manaus, capital city of the Brazilian state of Amazonas which lies on the banks of the Rio Negro and is completely surrounded by impenetrable forest.
We started our Amazonian adventure in the wild city of Iquitos, Peru, full of exotic tastes, smells and sounds. When we left the city behind on a old wooden boat headed for the depths of the rainforest, we had no idea what to expect. Dressed as much like Indiana Jones as we could get away with, we spent the next few days exploring quiet rivers, hacking our way through the jungle, and encountering many incredible people and exotic species who call the Amazon home.
