Bulgaria

For dinner we feasted on Bulgarian cuisine that included Chushki Burek, Pork Loin and Chocolate Mascarpone Cake at Lubimoto restaurant in Sofia, Bulgaria. Often when we're seeking out new restaurants to try in an unfamiliar city, we ask the advice of friends or travel acquaintances that are familiar with the local dining scene. With two independent recommendations from friends for Lubimoto it was a no brainer: this was a place we HAD to try before leaving Sofia. The owners, three brothers, made us feel welcome cracking jokes and inquiring about where we were from and what we were doing here in Sofia. Before we knew it our first appetizer had arrived at our table: Chushki burek This Bulgarian dish consists of stuffed red peppers loaded with feta cheese and tomatoes. It's crispy exterior is then smothered in a rich and tangy yogurt sauce. This dish was an instant hit with us both. A real sign we're enjoying our food is when there is little chatter. I think we were both on a mission to pry as many of these into our mouths as quickly as possible. Our main was a hearty serving of pork loin with a side of potatoes coated in cheese and gravy. Underneath the melty goodness were a generous portion of mushrooms and pickles. This hearty dish reminded us both of Thanksgiving in Canada. This is the kind of meal we'd have with family and friends. Once again, this didn't last very long. Another day, another decadent dessert. A generous slab of chocolate mascarpone cake lay in front of our eyes. For those unfamiliar with mascarpone, it is an Italian cheese made from cream, coagulated by ingredients such as acetic and citric acids. It has a consisting similar to cream cheese. Considering how full were both were, I have no idea how we ended up polishing off the cake. By the end of the meal I felt as though I needed to be carried out by wheel-barrel. Unlike our meal at Made In Home, this feast represented excellent value for dollar spent. For the three dishes (appetizer, main, dessert) we paid only $13 USD. For a restaurant that offers up great food, friendly service and a warm environment, I HIGHLY recommend it. If you're in Sofia head to 25 Gen.
