Paris Agreement - Status of Ratification

     Parties have ratified, of 197 Parties to the Convention

On 5 October 2016, the threshold for entry into force of the Paris Agreement was achieved. The Paris Agreement entered into force on 4 November 2016. The first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1) took place in Marrakech, Morocco from 15-18 November 2016.

Nazhat_Khan.jpg Informal open-ended consultations on the expectations for COP 23
On Saturday, 13 May, the incoming-Presidency held open-ended informal consultations on the expectations for COP 23. Ambassador Nazhat Khan, accompanied by Minister Inia Seruiratu and Ambassador Deo Saran, assured Parties and observers that the incoming-Presidency would maintain an open-door policy. Furthermore, the incoming-Presidency committed to organizing a transparent and inclusive process.
Parties and observers focused on the importance of defining the format and content of the Facilitative Dialogue and on advancing on the Paris Agreement work programme.
Ambassador Khan closed by inviting everyone to work through the process of “talanoa”. Talanoa is derived from tala, meaning “talking or telling stories”, and noa, meaning “zero or without concealment.” It refers to a process of strengthening relationships based on understanding and collaboration, allowing for an honest and open dialogue.

The Presiding Officers of the subsidiary bodies, Mr. Carlos Fuller (Belize, SBSTA Chair), Mr. Tomasz Chruszczow (Poland, SBI Chair), Ms. Sarah Baashan (Saudi Arabia, APA Co-Chair) and Ms. Jo Tyndall(New Zealand, APA Co-Chair), met in Bonn with the secretariat for a technical briefing on the progress of work on the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Malaysia accepted Doha Amendment
Malaysia deposited its instrument of acceptance of the Doha amendment to the Kyoto Protocol on 12 April 2017. The amendment is expected to enter into force after three quarters of the Parties to the Protocol submit their instruments of acceptance to the Depositary. The United Nations is encouraging governments to speed up their ratification of the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the international emissions reduction treaty. To date, 77 Parties have accepted the extension and 144 are required to bring it into force.
