Josh (Tom Hanks) realizes that his wish to be big came true.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
More than anything else, 13-year old New Jerseyite Josh (David Moscow) wants to be "big". That's the wish he makes at an odd-looking amusement pier fortunetelling machine. The next morning, Josh wakes up-only to discover that he's grown to manhood overnight! (At this point, the part is taken over by Tom Hanks). Still a 13-year-old mentally and emotionally, Josh decides to hide out in New York City until he can figure out what to do next. He lucks into a job with a major toy company run by kid-at-heart McMillan (Robert Loggia). By cannily bringing a child's eye view to McMillan's business, Josh rises to the top-and in process, he falls in love with fellow employee Susan (Elizabeth Perkins). But he's still a kid, and he'd like to go back to his own world and own body. Written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, Big proved a crucial success for budding director Penny Marshall, who'd work harmoniously with Hanks again on the radically different A League of Their Own. There are, for example, scenes of the younger Josh, that give a better understanding about his wish to acquire adulthood faster. There are also more scenes about the "adult" Josh, wishing to become a kid again. Josh's best friend's efforts, to change him back into a boy are shown in MUCH more detail. Billy never gives up. Watching this from beginning to end almost feels like a full movie...(because they were all throughout the film) These scenes were amazing.... Most likely cut due to time restraints...

Twenty-three years ago, Christa Dahlstrom--a college sophomore and Minnesota native--rented a VHS camcorder and brought it and two friends (Ted Johnson and Brian Glenn) to the Minnesota State Fair. Back at school she spent weeks learning the dorm's linear video editing system, with the help of her film-major boyfriend (i.e. me), and cutting together this irreverent and loving overview. Food-on-a-stick, Ye Old Mill, beauty queen butter sculptures, tractors, sideshow barkers, and bull semen. The tape has degraded quite a bit, so I have done a tiny bit of cleanup, and removed a couple of minutes entirely. Looking back at this I am reminded that she has always been funnier than me, and a better filmmaker. I’m excited she’s making movies again. -

Just Plain Big: Minnesota State Fair 1988
Twenty-three years ago, Christa Dahlstrom--a college sophomore and Minnesota native--rented a VHS camcorder and brought it and two friends (Ted Johnson and Brian Glenn) to the Minnesota State Fair. Back at school she spent weeks learning the dorm's linear video editing system, with the help of her film-major boyfriend (i.e. me), and cutting together this irreverent and loving overview. Food-on-a-stick, Ye Old Mill, beauty queen butter sculptures, tractors, sideshow barkers, and bull semen. The tape has degraded quite a bit, so I have done a tiny bit of cleanup, and removed a couple of minutes entirely. Looking back at this I am reminded that she has always been funnier than me, and a better filmmaker. I’m excited she’s making movies again.

OK...there was no real surf this week (April 11-2010), so it was time to look into the old bag of Super 8 mm movies. I found some good stuff. Places that we pioneered and surfed and a few other spots. Some of these surfers are gone and some are still surfing today. The dates are from 1975 to 1988. It's all old movie film...and I didn't spend the money or time to get this stuff transferred the right way. But you get the idea when you see it. It's funny looking at this stuff. I remember it like it was yesterday...and it was sort of...only yesterday, was 35 years ago...YIKES! The music is from my old band VINNY. It was produced by the CARS Drummer David Robinson. This was a big local hit on WBCN in 1983...the song is called "I NEVER SAW YOU..." it's an appropriate song for this footage....

Walter Wolfman Washington Heats The Hague 1988
Back in 1988 the North Sea Jazz festival organized a club tour the week before the festival started. One of the big acts was Walter Wolfman Washington. Supercool nice guy with his great band played at de Zwarte Ruiter ( the Black Horseman) First time I was this "upclose and personal" with a band, in the middle of the bumping grinding, jumping and singing audience feeling the music. The place was small, the stage was even smaller, packed with people, sweat and drinks it was a night to never forget. Shot with a Sony M3a on a Miller tripod, recorded on U-matic. The 6800 portable if I'm not mistaken. The H264 was to big so made a smaller WMV. Breaking the 4th Wall Movie Supercut
A compilation of scenes and moments from films that all "break the fourth wall" - that is, acknowledge (usually directly to the camera, and therefore the audience) that they're part of a movie. The term comes from the imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage in a traditional three-walled box set in a proscenium theatre, through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play. The montage includes 54 different films (some used more than once) from perhaps the very first example of breaking the fourth wall right up to today. There were so many other great examples I couldn't find room for (sadly, The Dude and The Big Lebowski's narrator don't abide here), I'd love to hear which 4th wall breakers you'd also include. Written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, Big proved a crucial success for budding director Penny Marshall, who'd work harmoniously with Hanks again on the radically different A League of Their Own. The cinematography was by Barry Sonenfeld, who went on to become a director himself with The Addams Family. That Big was heavily reliant upon the input of Tom Hanks and Penny Marshall was proven by the failed attempt to turn the property into a Broadway musical.

Twenty-three years ago, Christa Dahlstrom--a college sophomore and Minnesota native--rented a VHS camcorder and brought it and two friends (Ted Johnson and Brian Glenn) to the Minnesota State Fair.
Back at school she spent weeks learning the dorm's linear video editing system, with the help of her film-major boyfriend (i.e. me), and cutting together this irreverent and loving overview.
Food-on-a-stick, Ye Old Mill, beauty queen butter sculptures, tractors, sideshow barkers, and bull semen.
The tape has degraded quite a bit, so I have done a tiny bit of cleanup, and removed a couple of minutes entirely.
Looking back at this I am reminded that she has always been funnier than me, and a better filmmaker. I’m excited she’s making movies again.

At this point it's probably more dangerous/terrifying to wake up in a dumpster in downtown Dayton Ohio than it is to wake up in a dumpster in Times Square, but that wasn't always the case. The films of William Lustig have a knack for framing the gritty, filthy, and desperate streets of a New York that doesn't really exist anymore. Before and after shots of some of the locations in VIGILANTE would be almost unrecognizable. Lustig's incendiary dig at New York's finest, MANIAC COP, is another time capsule of this sort. Innocent people are turning up dead and witnesses all say the same thing - it's one of the boys in blue. Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) is framed and together with the chief (Tom Atkins) and his girlfriend (Theresa Mallory) sets out to catch the real killer and clear his name.
Car chases, double-crosses, and stark violence have MANIAC COP (and its sequels) a staple of the genre. Join Spectacle and director William Lustig for a newly remastered version of the film.

OK...there was no real surf this week (April 11-2010), so it was time to look into the old bag of Super 8 mm movies. I found some good stuff. Places that we pioneered and surfed and a few other spots. Some of these surfers are gone and some are still surfing today.
The dates are from 1975 to 1988. It's all old movie film...and I didn't spend the money or time to get this stuff transferred the right way. But you get the idea when you see it.
It's funny looking at this stuff. I remember it like it was yesterday...and it was sort of...only yesterday, was 35 years ago...YIKES!
The music is from my old band VINNY. It was produced by the CARS Drummer David Robinson. This was a big local hit on WBCN in 1983...the song is called "I NEVER SAW YOU..." it's an appropriate song for this footage.

Back in 1988 the North Sea Jazz festival organized a club tour the week before the festival started. One of the big acts was Walter Wolfman Washington. Supercool nice guy with his great band played at de Zwarte Ruiter ( the Black Horseman)
First time I was this "upclose and personal" with a band, in the middle of the bumping grinding, jumping and singing audience feeling the music. The place was small, the stage was even smaller, packed with people, sweat and drinks it was a night to never forget.
Shot with a Sony M3a on a Miller tripod, recorded on U-matic. The 6800 portable if I'm not mistaken. The H264 was to big so made a smaller WMV. This is not for people looking for exciting footage edited by someone with ADD, this is all about the music baby! :) This is the raw recordings, no editing just straight to vimeo from 20 year old U-matic tapes.
I think the sound was by Frits Erkens and he used just a XY setup but can't remember. Just remember the drum solo and hanging out with the band... groovy times.

A compilation of scenes and moments from films that all "break the fourth wall" - that is, acknowledge (usually directly to the camera, and therefore the audience) that they're part of a movie. The term comes from the imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage in a traditional three-walled box set in a proscenium theatre, through which the audience sees the action in the world of the play.
The montage includes 54 different films (some used more than once) from perhaps the very first example of breaking the fourth wall right up to today. There were so many other great examples I couldn't find room for (sadly, The Dude and The Big Lebowski's narrator don't abide here), I'd love to hear which 4th wall breakers you'd also include.
