Bill Shorten to scrap entire GST system to avoid having to talk about tampons

Australia will not have a goods and services tax if a Labor Government is elected, following Bill Shorten's pledge to dismantle the system in its entirety today.

The move comes following persistent questions about the tax, most of which included the words 'tampon', 'period', and 'sanitary pad'.

The change will leave a $55 billion gap in the budget, but will mean male Government ministers will never have to use the word 'menstruation' again. "It's a small price to pay," one insider said.

Coalition Finance Minister Mathias Cormann backed the proposal, in a rare bi-partisan move.

When asked if it was reasonable for women to pay the GST on essential products relating to their period, Mr Shorten said,"What's the GST?"
