One of the coolest finds of our Iceland trip was this plane wreck in the middle of the black sand dunes at Solheimasandur. The twisted DC-3 wreckage has been on the beach since it crashed after running out of fuel in 1973. Photo: James Vodicka -
THIS is why I prefer to walk rather than drive... Driving past here you probably wouldn't even notice this swing on the beach. But when walking you have time to look around and soak up the surroundings, and stop and think: "Would this make a good picture?"This lonely swing on the Livadi waterfront (Astypalea Island, Greece [HDR bracket set]) was deserted on my return trip to Astypalea in late December, so I composed a little poem about it:Winter has come,The crowd's not here, This lonely swing,'Waits summer's cheer! Student nun at the Kila Gompa nunnery in Bhutan. The Buddhist nunnery is situated on a cliff side high above the Paro Valley near the Chele La pass at over 3600 metres above sea level. It's home to about 30 nuns who spend their day meditating, in prayer and spiritual learning. Photo: Richmond Goodwin -
The Emirates Palace Hotel is one of the sights of Abu Dhabi not to be missed. But as impressive as it is, I am even more impressed by the view from the hotel across to Etihad Towers and the adjoining Bab Al Qsar Hotel. I always find it difficult to tear myself away from this sight. Photo: Kirsten Walla -
Fresh snow on the Jordanelle Reservoir looking towards the Wasatch Range while leaving Park City on the 248 highway (January 2016). I love this shot - the sharp rugged mountains - the blue tones. It is a good representation of this wonderful ski area. Photo: Julie Stuart -
We visited the Byodo-In Temple in June 2016, beautiful grounds and architecture. It is located in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, Kahaluu, on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii. It was established on June 7, 1968, to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. The Byodo-In Temple in O'ahu is a smaller-scale replica of the over 950-year-old Byodo-in Temple, a United Nations World Heritage Site in Uji, Japan. A little known fact at least to us was that there was before World War 2 and still is a large population of people in Hawaii of Japanese descent. Photo: Mark King -
Panagia Portaitissa monastery viewed from a window of Querini's Venetian Castle, Astypalea Island, Greece. After taking an earlier version of this view, my camera bag with cameras and all photos from the first half of my trip was stolen in Madrid. After buying a replacement camera in Madrid and continuing my original itinerary, I returned to Astypalea on my way home, just before Christmas, to retake some of my best shots.Being winter, the castle was now closed, but I managed to crawl in under the castle door and re-take this shot from an even better vantage point than before, having unrestricted movement in the unattended castle! September 2016, Our hot air balloon fight in Cappadocia, Turkey, was a massive surprise when about one hundred balloons took off over about 15 minutes, a further big surprise was apart from rising about a thousand meters, ours and many other balloons also descended below ground level weaving among the 'fairy chimneys' with the greatest of ease. Were astounded at the manouvrability of the balloons and skill of the pilots. It was a truly fantastic experience and any timid passengers were soon full of confidence. Photo: Ross Grant
