TV: L is for...

Land of the Giants

Busy week for the props departmentDOWNSIZED DERRING-DO from the Infernomeister, wherein Steve, Dan, Mark, Betty, one obnoxious kid (de rigeur in all US fantasy series), a ditzy teen and the devious Fitzhugh crash their spaceship onto a planet which might be Earth where for no reason at all everyone is about 20 times bigger. GARY CONWAY and DON MATHESON were those warding off the big safety pins, buttons and pencil sharpeners, besides trying to escape the ever-present, ever-unconvinving “hand” which invariably scooped on or other of them up every episode.

Two obnoxious kids? Barry for sure, but Valerie didn’t look like a kid to me (“FHM” would have come a-calling for her had they been around back then).

Spoofed in a VW Polo ad a few years back, where one of the little people hid from a cat in a Matchbox scale Polo (complete with toy car single shade of beige interior), & survived being batted around by a large paw.

This was repeated in, I think, the “yoof” (ie for kids, geeks and ironic students; see also: Captain Scarlet, Star Trek (original and TNF), The Invaders) slot on BBC2 some time in either the late ’80s or early ’90s. The “huge fibreglass hands” became the stuff of legend.

“TNF”? TNG, I meant, of course.
