The father of a teenage boy who has been missing for three days fears his son could be suffering from hypothermia.

Eric, 16, was last seen leaving a home in Highvale, about 40 minutes north-west of Brisbane, just before 5pm on Monday afternoon.

Since then, the older brother to a baby sister and brother has not made contact with his family or friends, which was out of character for the teen, police said.

As temperatures dropped to about 13 degrees overnight in the region, his father feared his son, who was last seen wearing a T-shirt and long khaki cargo pants, could be getting sick.

"He is wet, he is cold, I fear he could be suffering from hypothermia," he told media.

"Eric, if by any chance you are seeing this, I hope you are safe.

"We love you Eric and we just hope that you come back safe."

An extensive land and air search that kicked off earlier this week will resume Thursday morning and will include more than 40 SES volunteers and a large number of police on horseback and motorbike.

The search area remains in the Highvale, Samford, Mount Glorious and Mount Nebo area, however a police spokesman said it was likely that search area would be expanded on Thursday.

The terrain the boy is missing in is largely mountain and bushland.
