Both Sides

Both Sides is the fifth solo studio album by English singer-songwriter Phil Collins. Featuring an adult-oriented soft rock based sound, the release came out in November 1993. Collins notably created the album entirely by himself without any collaborations from outside songwriters and performers, and he picked up mixed to positive critical reviews with the release, with Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic stating that the album's "artistically satisfying" songs feature "troubled, haunting tales".

A special two-disc edition of the album featuring the Live from the Board – Official Bootleg EP as a second disc, titled Far Side... of the World: Gold Souvenir Tour Edition after the final leg of the Both Sides tour, was released in Southeast Asia and Australia in 1995. It peaked at No. 13 in Australia.

The album achieved commercial success, reaching number one in the U.K., number eight in Australia, and number thirteen in the U.S. Collins also went on the highly successful Both Sides of the World Tour upon its release. That effort involved over a hundred performances in a tour that went over a year, and it showed that he remained a big performer live despite the shifts in the Anglo-American musical landscape taking place.

Both Sides, Now

"Both Sides, Now" is a song by Joni Mitchell, and one of her best-known songs. First recorded by Judy Collins in 1967, it subsequently appeared on Mitchell's 1969 album Clouds. She re-recorded the song in a lusher, orchestrated version for her 2000 album Both Sides Now.

Mitchell wrote "Both Sides, Now" in March 1967, inspired by a passage in Henderson the Rain King, a 1959 novel by Saul Bellow.

Judy Collins recorded the first commercially released version of the song, shortly after Mitchell wrote it, for her 1967 Wildflowers album. In October 1968 it was released as a single, reaching #8 on the U.S. pop singles charts by December. In early 1969 it won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance. The record peaked at #3 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey and "Both Sides, Now" has become one of Collins' signature songs.

Rolling Stone ranked "Both Sides, Now" #171 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Mitchell's version from her 2000 album was featured in the 2003 film Love Actually.

Joni Mitchell

Roberta Joan "Joni" Mitchell, CC (née Anderson; born November 7, 1943) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and painter. Mitchell's work is highly respected by critics, and she has deeply influenced fellow musicians in a diverse range of genres. Rolling Stone has called her "one of the greatest songwriters ever", and AllMusic has stated, "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century". Her lyrics are noted for their developed poetics, addressing social and environmental ideals alongside personal feelings of romantic longing, confusion, disillusion, and joy.

Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatchewan and Western Canada and then busking in the streets and dives of Toronto. In 1965, she moved to the United States and began touring. Some of her original songs ("Urge for Going", "Chelsea Morning", "Both Sides, Now", "The Circle Game") were covered by folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her debut album in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Mitchell, with popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock", helped define an era and a generation. Her 1971 recording Blue was rated the 30th best album ever made in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Mitchell switched labels and began moving toward jazz rhythms by way of lush pop textures on 1974's Court and Spark, her best-selling LP, featuring the radio hits "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris".

Perpetuum Jazzile

Perpetuum Jazzile is a Slovenian musical group, best known for a 2009 a capella cover of Toto's "Africa" performance video that has received more than 18 million YouTube views as of November 2015.

Founded in 1983, under its former name Gaudeamus Chamber Choir, it consists of both female and male singers. They are occasionally joined by the Slovenian Radio and Television Big Band instrumentalists. The choir mainly performs a cappella with one of its members, Sašo Vrabič, as vocal percussionist.

Music

Initially inspired by Gene Puerling, The Singers Unlimited, and The Swingle Singers, the choir performs bossa nova, swing music, funk, gospel, and pop, using harmonies characteristic of close harmony music.

Leadership

Founded by Marko Tiran in 1983, the choir's art leadership was in 2001 passed to Tomaž Kozlevčar, and ten years later to Peder Karlsson.

History

In 2006, they recorded Čudna noč (Strange Night) album, released by Dallas Records, and had a concert with Mansound (from Kiev, Ukraine). A vocal jazz seminar in Ljubljana was organized by them with Ward Swingle, the Swingle Singers founder.
