The job cuts at Fairfax's Australian mastheads are not the only big news at the company today.

In New Zealand, its pursuit of a merger with media rival NZME has been given a final blow from New Zealand's competition regulator.

The move was believed to be part of Fairfax's bid to get out of the New Zealand media altogether, and its rejection is likely to result in further job losses there.
