Fiji the worst Pacific nation for freedom of the press: Reporters Without Borders
The annual Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders has Fiji rising 13 places to a ranking of 67, but it still lags well behind neighbours PNG, Tonga, and Samoa, and is still considered to be one of the most difficult places in the Pacific to work as a journalist.
Former Fiji Times editor, Netani Rika, who is now the Managing Director of Islands Business magazine, says Fiji should be setting a better example for the region.
Mr Rika, who was a panellist at a World Press Freedom day forum organised by the University of the South Pacific, says there are still plenty of obstacles for journalists in Fiji to overcome.
