The Federal Government has set aside billions in the budget for infrastructure spending, with money set aside for the Snowy 2.0 project and the new Western Sydney airport. Billions have also been ear-marked for the long-discussed Inland Rail project, with another $10 billion to be funnelled into a new National Rail Program, to fund priority regional and urban rail programs. Paul Fletcher, the Minister for Urban Infrastructure, said heavy rail is very important to support Australia's large cities as they grow.

Sexual abuse survivors are concerned the Government's plan to deny welfare for a disability caused solely by substance abuse could cause further suffering. They say many victims turn to alcohol and drugs without acknowledging their past trauma, and are too debilitated to work. The Government estimates 450 fewer people will be granted the disability support pension after its changes to the assessment criteria. More

US President Donald Trump has met with the Russian Foreign Minister at the White House, a day after sacking the head of the FBI, James Comey. The intelligence chief was overseeing one of a number of concurrent investigations into Russian interference in the presidential election, and links to the Trump campaign. Both Trump and Russian officials continue to deny that any links exist.
