Today, we are publishing our latest Twitter Transparency Report with updated data covering the latter half of 2016. This is also our tenth report, a milestone that seemed a long way off when we announced our first report back in July 2012. A lot has changed over the past five years, both at Twitter and around the world.

Back in 2011, we were a group of college students who were angry with the level of self-censorship that existed within the mainstream Turkish media. Twitter felt like the natural home for our journalistic initiatives and at the time was becoming increasingly popular in Turkey. We were impressed by the thoroughness of communication and possibility for meaningful interaction. I remember we would ask ourselves, “I’m sending a Tweet to a minister and he’s going to see it?”.

A commitment to protecting the privacy of account holders is built into the DNA of Twitter. As such, this Data Privacy Day (@DataPrivacyDay), which falls on January 28 each year, we backed the overall mission to raise awareness of privacy issues and data protection best practices. This message reaches a broad variety of actors in society - individuals, families and corporations - as all of them have an interest in protecting their data and privacy.

Today, we’re able to speak openly about two national security requests for the first time, specifically two national security letters (NSLs). These NSLs were accompanied by gag orders when they were served (one in 2015, one in 2016), preventing us from notifying the impacted account holders or publicly disclosing their existence.

Bi-annually, Twitter employees come together to volunteer and give back to their communities. This year #FridayForGood was rebranded to be called #TwitterForGood Day, in the spirit of recognizing that service should be a continuous practice, and offices around the world could therefore celebrate giving back on different #TwitterForGood Days. Twitter Dublin has long supported @CoderDojo, a global network of free coding clubs for children. Since founding in 2011, CoderDojo has grown from its roots in Cork, with over 1,100 Dojos established in 63 countries. Last Saturday, another Dojo was added to that tally. A group of volunteer employees and some developers welcomed 35 students to the first class of CoderDojo at Twitter Dublin.

Twitter partnered with the Women’s Forum for their Global Meeting in Deauville. The Forum is the world’s leading global platform for women to elevate their voices on issues of major social, political, environmental and economic concern. As part of our participation in the three-day event, we hosted our first #PositionOfStrength event in France. #PositionOfStrength is Twitter’s safety and women’s empowerment initiative.

We’re partnering with industry peers to help curb the spread of terrorist content online.

We recently participated and hosted Anti-Bullying Week events across the UK.
