How much does a garage door cost?* That depends on the type and size of door you want. Do you want a tilting garage door, a roller door, a panel door or an automatic door? Do you want your garage door to be made from timber, steel or aluminium? Here's what you need to know about garage doors before you start getting quotes from garage door supplier/installers.

Types of Garage Doors

Some of the most common types of garage doors, in order of expense, include:

• Roller doors are now the most commonly installed garage doors in Australia. Because they are so common, they have become the least expensive to buy and install.
• Tilt doors were traditional favourites until roller doors came on to the market. A tilt door costs about the same as a roller door or a little more.
• Sectional doors (or panel doors) are segmented into panels that fold back as the garage door is opened.

Roller doors are made of steel or aluminium. While they come in a limited range of styles, they do come in a wide range of colours. Tilt doors can be made from timber, timber veneer, aluminium or steel. Sectional doors come in a wide range of styles and colours. Considered "designer" garage doors, optional custom features such as windows are available.

How Much Does a Garage Door Cost?*

Cost factors include the type of door you choose, the materials it's made from, the size of the garage door and its style. If you shop around and get quotes, you might be able to find a single car roller door for around $500 or a double door for under $1000, but you'll probably have to install it yourself at a price like that. More realistically, expect to pay around $1500 to $1800 for a double roller door (installed) and between $2000 and $3000 for a double sectional garage door. If you want to have a custom made sectional garage door, it can cost between $4500 and $6500.

For added convenience, you can buy an automatic garage door opener for any type of garage door. Do-it-yourself models are available for about $200, but to have a quality automatic opener installed, expect to pay at least $350 to $450.

Keep in mind that a garage door takes up a great deal of visible space. If you are looking for a budget door, choose one that can be painted or comes in a colour that matches or complements the colour of your house. If you're willing to pay more for a custom sectional door, the garage door can become a design feature of your home and potentially enhance its value.
