Man who dumped junk mail instead of delivering it cops hefty fine

A man from Perth's northern suburbs has been slapped with a $3000 fine for illegally dumping trailer loads of junk mail.

Twenty-five-year-old Nathan Robert Green from Padbury was caught by investigators from the Department of Environment Regulation's Illegal Dumping Program, who used hidden cameras to catch him ditching promotional calenders and pamphlets in bushland.

Mr Breen dumped the printed materials at the Warbrook Road site on four different occasions across September last year, with footage from one incident showing him arriving with a ute loaded with bundles of printed material and leaving with an empty tray.

He faced the Joondalup Magistrate's Court and was fined $3000 and ordered to pay $328 in costs.

The department's Illegal Dumping Program pursues around 200 illegal dumping investigations a year.

DER's Senior Manager of Investigations Matt Warnock said the conviction shows how effective its covert cameras are at catching people in the act.

"This offender had been paid to deliver these calendars and instead drove to the bush and dumped them," he said.

"This was blatant illegal dumping by someone who showed no respect for the law or the environment.

"Illegal dumping is a serious offence and the Department will continue to take action against those with disregard for the law."

Illegal dumping can be reported to DER's 24-hour Pollution Watch Hotline on 1300 784 782 or pollutionwatch@der.wa.gov.au
