Man charged with assaulting airline staff

A Perth man has been charged with assaulting two airline staff members before boarding a plane to Melbourne.

The 43-year-old man was initially approached by an airline staff member at Perth Airport on Monday night before boarding his scheduled flight to Melbourne.

It will be alleged the man became hostile when questioned about the amount of alcohol he had drunk before punching the staff member.

It will be alleged the man punched a second staff member who came to help.

AFP officers were called and the man was arrested.

He was due to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday on two counts of common assault.

AFP Commander Matt Rippon said the incident highlighted the seriousness of such behaviour.

"Abuse or violence toward airline staff or members of the public will absolutely not be tolerated by the AFP in the airport environment," Commander Rippon said.

"Everyone has a right to feel safe while doing their jobs and it is no different at our airports around the country.

"Incidents involving assault, abuse and general anti-social behaviour are unacceptable and perpetrators will be prosecuted where criminal offences are identified."
