A man, believed to be over the age of 70, has died in a two-car crash in Tuggeranong.

Another person is in a serious condition in hospital after the head-on crash on Long Gully Road, Isaacs about 12.15pm on Wednesday.

The crash happened just metres from a roadside cross commemorating a previous fatal accident.

Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman, said there had been one person in each car.

Police believe one of the cars crossed on to the wrong side of the road.

It takes the ACT's road toll for 2017 to four.

"It's a timely reminder to drive safely on the roads, not only in road safety week, but any time," Sergeant Boorman said.

Long Gully Road was closed at Erindale Drive and Mugga Lane ends for several hours, but reopened about 4pm.

Two police cars attended the scene as well as an ambulance.

There have been multiple fatal crashes on that stretch of road.

An 81-year-old Isabella Plains man died in a two-car crash at the intersection with Mugga Lane in December 1998.

A 29-year-old Farrer man died when the car he was driving and a pantec truck collided in July 2005.

More to come.
