New Orleans (/nuː ˈɔːrlɪnz/,/nuː ˈɔːrliənz/, /nuː ɔːrˈliːnz/, or /ˈnɔːrlənz/; French: La Nouvelle-Orléans [la nuvɛlɔʁleɑ̃]) is a major United States port and the largest city and the center of the metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States. The New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,452,502.
The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, as it was established by French colonists and strongly influenced by their European culture. It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, dating to French colonial times. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in the United States.
Orléans (UK /ɔːˈlɪənz/;French pronunciation: [ɔʁleã]) is a city in north-central France, about 111 kilometres (69 mi) southwest of Paris. It is the capital of the Loiret department and of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
Orléans is located on the Loire River where the river curves south towards the Massif Central.
The city of New Orleans (in French, La Nouvelle-Orléans), in Louisiana, United States is named after the commune of Orléans.
Orléans is located in the northern bend of the Loire, which crosses from east to west. Orléans belongs to the vallée de la Loire sector between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire, which was in 2000 inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The capital of Orléanais, 120 kilomètres south-south-west of Paris, it is bordered to the north by the Beauce region and the forêt d'Orléans, and the Orléans-la-Source neighbourhood and the Sologne region to the south.
Five bridges in the city cross the river :
Mardi Gras (/ˈmɑːrdiɡrɑː/), also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three King's Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.
Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. In countries such as England, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which is derived from the word shrive, meaning "confess".
Popular practices on Mardi Gras include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, debauchery, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition, as it is associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins. In many areas, the term "Mardi Gras" has come to mean the whole period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day. In some American cities, it is now called "Mardi Gras Day".
Louisiana (i/luːˌiːziˈænə/ or i/ˌluːziˈænə/; French: État de Louisiane, [lwizjan]; Louisiana Creole: Léta de la Lwizyàn) is a state located in the southern region of the United States. Louisiana is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital is Baton Rouge and largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are the local government's equivalent to counties. The largest parish by population is East Baton Rouge Parish, and the largest by land area is Plaquemines. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, Texas to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of orchids and carnivorous plants.
The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. After New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city developed around the Vieux Carré ("Old Square" in English), a central square. The district is more commonly called the French Quarter today, or simply "The Quarter," related to changes in the city with American immigration after the Louisiana Purchase. Most of the extant historic buildings were constructed either in the late 18th century, during the city's period of Spanish rule, or were built during the first half of the 19th century, after U.S. annexation and statehood.
The district as a whole has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, with numerous contributing buildings that are separately deemed significant. It is a prime tourist destination in the city, as well as attracting local residents. Because of its distance from areas where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as well as the strength and height of the nearest Mississippi River Levees in contrast to other levees along the canals and lakefront, it suffered relatively light damage from floodwater as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region.

From August 28th - 29th, 2012 storm chasers Michael Laca, Robert Jones, Greg Nordstrom and Devin Toporek intercepted Hurricane Isaac in downtown New Orleans and the surrounding areas of southeastern Louisiana. With the large windfield and slow motion of Hurricane Isaac, impacts in southeastern Louisiana began well before the closest point of approach to the hurricane's center. By 10am CDT on the morning of August 28th, tropical storm conditions had already begun near the mouth of the Mississippi river in extreme southeastern Louisiana and continued to spread farther inland throughout the day. By late evening, strong convection associated with the core of Isaac was rapidly approaching New Orleans and winds in the downtown area began to increase dramatically. Our chase team's position, in a...

Travel video about destination New Orleans in the United States of America. A fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it ‘La Louisiana’. However, Napoleon later accepted $15 million from President Jefferson and in 1840, it was the fourth largest city in the U.S.A. The Garden District is a sought-after residential area in which there is an abundance of magnolia trees, palms, shrubs and flowers. The city’s largest graveyard, the Metairie Cemetery, has over 7,000 graves and an array of spectacular mausoleums which astound the eye.Gumbo Soup, Jambalaya, Hurricane Cocktails and Dixie Beer are just a few of the...

New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. ENJOYED WATCHING? GREAT, NOW PLEASE SHARE SO WE CAN PROVIDE MORE GREAT CONTENT! New Orleans Gangs Documentary 2016 : The Gotti Boyz are INSANE ! New orleans has a very dark side; vicious, merciless gangs. Executions, drug dealing, and kidnapping is only a few of the crimes committed in New Orleans. There are a few gangs dominating the area, but the biggest one, by now doubt, is the Gotti Boyz. Unlike the crips, bloods, or other gangs, they don't usually wear specific clothes, and care about nothing. Because they grew up in a very poor area, they seem to be more serious and scary. They called themselves " gotti" because they " got it / get it " meaning, they will get what they want and nothing will stop them. Viewer discretion advised ! Enjoy watching ! ----------------------------...

The IHNC Lake Borgne Surge Barrier also called the Great Wall of Louisiana is a storm surge barrier constructed near the confluence of and across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet near New Orleans. The barrier runs generally north-south from a point just east of Michoud Canal on the north bank of the GIWW and just south of the existing Bayou Bienvenue flood control structure. Navigation gates where the barrier crosses the GIWW and Bayou Bienvenue reduce the risk of storm surge coming from Lake Borgne and/or the Gulf of Mexico. Another navigation gate (Seabrook Floodgate) has been constructed in the Seabrook vicinity where the IHNC meets Lake Pontchartrain to block a storm surge from entering the IHNC from the Lake.

I called up Jeff over at https://www.youtube.com/c/jeffoliverfxs and we were able to get out in the water for my last day of fishing before I had to work for the next three weekends. I caught my personal best in Speckled Trout at 18.5" during this outing. These were really nice looking trout with no throwbacks. The Black Drum was too small but the big Croaker was a keeper. Some cats were also hooked this morning, but they looked like kitties. Collin did catch a large Redfish, just a little over the slot here. Ride along with IllinoisRailfan Productions as we've once again found ourselves looking out the back of one of Amtrak's cross-country overnight passenger trains. It's 1:45 PM, and we're departing the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans, Louisiana on our way to Chicago, Illinois. We're operating solely on tracks owned by the Canadian National Railroad on the Mainline of Mid-America, formerly owned and operated by the Illinois Central Railroad. It's a quick hour as we make our way out of the city of New Orleans and almost immediately find ourselves skirting along the western coast of Lake Pontchartrain and well on our way to the Windy City. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Welcome aboard! Some Notes: -The window on the back of this particular Superliner was pretty ...
City Park is a mature established public park in the northern part of New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
New Orleans LA is served by most Class I railroads. Transfers to the important Gulf of Mexico port at the delta of the Mississippi River are handled by the local New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB). Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National, Kansas City Southern, and NOPB operate or share major yard facilities in this important railroad town of the Deep South. It could be a paradise for railfans, if... it would not be as terribly congested as it turned out to be on this ordinary Sunday. In some cases, trains needed hours to move just a few miles. If a train happens to be in emergency on one of the main arteries, nothing goes - this also happened on this day. One train behind another lined up and waited for access to one of the yards. On the good side, since so many ...

Laissez les bons temps rouler! In New Orleans the good times are perpetually rolling down Bourbon Street, which, thanks to the city’s annual Mardi Gras celebration, has quite a party animal reputation. Once you’ve soaked up the scenery of the historic French Quarter, tour the elegant Garden District and meet the colorful characters of Frenchmen Street. Experience the city's supernatural vibe at the Voodoo Museum or by taking a guided ghost or vampire tour through taverns, alleyways, and cemeteries. No city in North America can compete with New Orleans when it comes to culture, food, historic architecture, joie de vivre and tourism options. The Crescent City has suffered plagues, wars, imperial regime changes and devastating floods. Yet, it always wakes up with a smile on its face. This m...
