Brookton man loses arm and foot when hit by train after falling on tracks

A 32-year-old man has lost an arm and a foot after trying to cross train tracks in Brookton while a freight train was passing through overnight.

At around 7.30pm, the man and his 34-year-old brother climbed onto a moving bulk freight train carriage as it was passing through the town along the Great Southern Highway.

WA Police Sergeant Andrew Maher said it was understood the pair were intoxicated when the man fell between a break in the carriages.

He was run over by the train, and his foot and arm were severed.

Emergency services were quick on the scene, and the RAC helicopter landed on the Brookton Football Oval in order to attend to the man.

It is understood he was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital, and is now in a stable condition.

Brookton Police posted a photo of the incident on Twitter, and said the incident was a reminder why pedestrians should always wait for trains to pass before attempting to cross.
