Star Performer
Egg Tart (Morphettville - Schweppes Oaks)
What a sensational win and she might be something special. The Sebring filly had it all to do at the top of the straight and she stormed through the field to grab favourite Kenedna late. It took a great ride by Kerrin McEvoy as well who managed to weave his way through a tricky situation. The Group One victory was her fifth-straight win going back to her maiden victory in November.
What a win!

MORPHETTVILLE
Stirring finish to Schweppes Oaks
Egg Tart ($3.50) and Kenedna ($3.10) were the clear top-two with punters in the Oaks and they provided a terrific finish to the Group One race. Both fillies settled back in the field on the rail with Kerrin McEvoy aboard Egg Tart stalking John Allen on the favourite. Both jockeys gave their mounts a peach of a ride, with Allen heading back to the rail in the straight while McEvoy had to weave his way through the field. Kenedna hit the lead at the 100m before the Weir-trained filly was denied in the shadows of the posts by Egg Tart. The Queensland Oaks remains a possibility for both Egg Tart and Kenedna who share favouritism in the race at $4.40 with Dawn Wall.
What a win by Egg Tart!!! #Morphettville

What a ripper ride Mcevoy on Egg Tart
— Mutleymacca (@Mutleymacca) May 6, 2017
Gee, that was an exciting race. Two ripping rides. Johnny Allen is every bit a Group 1 flat rider. Egg Tart the superior beast. Stirring.

Ollie bounces back in G1 Sangster Stakes
Damien Oliver found some trouble aboard Bassett in the Group Three D C McKay Stakes earlier in the day (See Saturday Slaughter) but had no issues aboard stablemate Secret Agenda in the Group One Sangster Stakes. Jumping from barrier 17, the mare began brilliantly and Oliver was able to take her to the lead without using too much energy. She gave a strong kick early in the straight, skipping a couple of lengths clear of the field and from there the result was never in doubt. Local hope Viddora ($8.50) finished off strongly to grab second in front of I Am A Star ($6).
Weir’s big week rolls on
The #BackWeirDrinkBeer motto has been outstanding for the wallets of punters but not so good for the health. After claiming a ridiculous 14 winners over the Warrnambool carnival, Weir’s big week continued at Morphettville picking up a double with Amelie’s Star and Indian Thunder, both with Damian Lane in the saddle. It was almost a treble for Weir with Kenedna going down narrowly in the Oaks.
No magic at Morphettville
Joao Moreira was a major drawcard on Oaks day but walked away without a placing from a full book of rides.
Well the Magic Man Joao Moreira leaves @SAJockeyClub without a winner, but hey that's racing. Fabulous to meet you Joao hope we get you back pic.twitter.com/lefVbIBfHt

GOLD COAST
It’s Somewhat digs deep for punters
Airborne Godolphin gelding It’s Somewhat looked tough to beat on paper in the G2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) and he was duly backed accordingly ($3.60 into $2.30 since Wednesday). Fortunately for punters, the Doncaster winner delivered but it wasn’t an easy watch. With Tye Angland doing the steering, he found the lead easily enough but was under pressure from his rivals a long way from home. Single Gaze ($6.50, 2nd, beaten 0.2L) gave him plenty to think about in the straight but the six-year-old dug deep to land his third consecutive win. The son of Dynaformer is in career-best form and is now a $3.50 favourite for the G1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 20.

G1 players emerge
It’s Somewhat took out the day’s feature but he wasn’t the only Gold Coast winner that’s looks to be tracking ideally towards G1 targets at the winter carnival. Chris Waller-trained filly Dawn Wall – who was aided by a peach from Hugh Bowman (see Punters Pearler) - was dominant in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) and looks firmly in the mix for the Queensland Oaks (2400m) on June 3. G3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) winner Taking Aim, from the astute Snowden yard, built on the promise he showed during his summer campaign and is heading towards the JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 10.
Out second leg
The majority of Gold Coast quaddie tickets were confetti after the Listed Silk Stocking (R6, 1200m) when With A Promise lobbed at $81 (and paid as much as $126). The Ben Currie-trained filly, who finished fourth in a Class 6 at her previous outing, looked out of her depth on paper but produced a career-best performance to lead all the way in the $150,000 sprint. The roughie showed plenty of ticker to hang on by 0.1L from Sydney mare Nancy ($6.50), with Elegant Composure ($4.80EF) not far away in third. Well done to anyone who managed to find her! 👏
Timely vision announcement
Racing Queensland announced this morning that Racing.com will broadcast the five biggest meetings of the Brisbane winter carnival beginning with next weekend’s Doomben 10,000 program (see here for details). It came as welcome news to many Queensland punters, who are often critical of the way Sky prioritise inferior NSW meetings on premium channel Sky Thoroughbred Central. An annoying instance of this occurred today when a replay of the photo-finish in the G3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic was bypassed in order to broadcast a Newcastle maiden.
Appreciate this Newcastle maiden is thrilling but any danger of showing the photo from the Group race at the Gold Coast @SkyRacingAU?

Wowee. Sky's contempt towards Brisbane racing finally catching up with them?

FLEMINGTON
Weir’s Doomben Cup hope
Fresh off a typically dominant training performance at The ‘Bool, the Darren Weir show rolled on with Articus ($6) in the opener at HQ. The European import had the 1800m Chairman’s Club Handicap in his keeping a long way from home and passed the post a length clear of runner-up Haradafull ($5), with Show A Star a further 2.25L away in third. He was clearly in a different league to today's opposition and is now a $7 chance for the G1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
He's come good! Articus saunters into the lead in a stunning move around the bend to score tidily in the first @FlemingtonVRC. Weir again. pic.twitter.com/FfMqgKppJt

Nightmare on Epsom Road
Race four at Flemington was called the Comedy King Handicap (1400m) but there was nothing funny about it if you backed either Pure Pride ($3.10F) or Tshahitsi ($6.50). Both gallopers appeared to have plenty in the tank but were painfully stuck behind horse flesh for the entire straight (finished sixth and ninth respectively). For the record, Peter White-trained gelding Inspector ($7.50) got the cash but the hard-luck stories were the biggest talking point out of the race. Yuck.
Tshahitsi still running up the back of things coming back to the mounting yard...

Quality by name, quality by nature
It’s worth remembering the name Divine Quality. The Robbie Griffiths-trained filly backed up a commanding debut win at Bendigo with a stylish 3.75L victory in the Indian Summer Handicap (1200m). It’s obviously early days but the three-year-old appears to have the potential to progress to bigger and better things.
Wow. Put her away and come back in the spring, Robbie. Smart conveyance, Divine Quality.

ROSEHILL
New Universe makes an impact first-up
Chris Waller has another top kiwi in his stable with New Universe impressing in his first start in Australia. The Darci Brahma gelding had only had the one public trial back in February, but there was money all week the Waller-trained gelding, seeing him firm from $10 into $3.80. He settled last from a wide draw and only had the one horse behind him at the 300m before storming down the outside to record a one-length win.
Brisbane next for top mare
Top of My List will continue her campaign in Brisbane after claiming back-to-back black-type wins with victory in the Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m). She hit the lead at the 300m and got away from the chasing pack before holding off a late challenge from Allergic. Trainer Anthony Cummings said the Brisbane Cup was the target with the Doomben Cup a possibility as a lead-up race.
Bonny O’reilly bound for better races
Bonny O’reilly is one to watch over the Brisbane winter carnival. The Bjorn Baker-trained mare resumed from a break with a tough win in the final race of the day at Rosehill. It made it three-straight wins for the lightly-raced four-year-old who is still on the improve.
Delighted to see Bonnie O'Reilly resume is such terrific style @rosehillgardens. A mare on the up with a big winter ahead pic.twitter.com/DlJdWejVbX

Punters Pearler
Hugh Bowman on Dawn Wall (Gold Coast R4)
The leading Sydney rider gave the Queenslanders a lesson aboard Dawn Wall in the Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m). Bowman faced a tough task on paper from barrer 11 but his positivity saw the $3.80 equal favourite settle in an ideal trailing position one off the fence. He later produced her at the perfect moment and the promising filly did the rest 👌🍏🍎.
Great ride Bowman

Saturday Slaughter
Damien Oliver aboard Bassett (Morphettville R4)
Ollie hasn’t been the punters pal on a couple of occasions in Adelaide over the past two weeks. He was stiff not to get the gong last week so we’ll give it to him this week for Bassett.
Geez Bassett had no hope there in Adelaide tough watch for backers 🙈🙈😧

— Chris Schumacher (@schuey20) May 6, 2017
You wouldn't be complaining (too loudly) if you jagged the quaddie, but the divvies were a bit underwhelming given it featured a $101-shot.
@Punters Bigger question is why were the payouts so low with a $101 and $14.40 winners? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/k4JJ1s39mC
