Brisbane traffic: 'Big mess' after multi-vehicle crash on Story Bridge

Brisbane city traffic became 'a big mess' in the space of 15 minutes, thanks to two separate crashes on Sunday morning.

The worst of the two happened on the Story Bridge about 11.45am and was believed to have involved four vehicles. An inbound and outbound lane on the bridge were blocked after the accident, but reopened about 1pm.

Australian Traffic Network spokeswoman Olympia Kwitowski said just after midday that delays on the southern side of the bridge stretched several kilometres along Main Street into Woolloongabba and along Shafston Avenue in Kangaroo Point.

"There is no escaping the big bridge mess," Ms Kwitowski said.

However, by 1pm, delays had eased. However, congestion remained along Main Street in Woolloongabba and the Riverside Expressway also felt the effects of the Story Bridge crash, as drivers used it as an alternative route into the city, with delays remaining into the afternoon.

To make matters worse, a separate crash on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley about 11.30am meant there were also delays on the north side of the bridge.

Ann Street and Gipps Street were both congested, but by 1pm the accident had cleared along with the delays.

Following the two accidents, Ms Kwitowski described Brisbane CBD traffic as "just a general mess". However, all traffic delays from both accidents had cleared by 2pm.
