Yesterday - A Tribute To The Beatles - Live From Las Vegas! (repost)

Yesterday - A Tribute To The Beatles - Live From Las Vegas! - 2007

Performing all eras of Beatles music in their original key, wearing drainpipe trousers and playing authentic instruments, Yesterday - The Beatles Tribute has performed on five continents. Beginning with the British Invasions in 1964, the mop tops from Liverpool began the first wave of Beatlemania. The Beatles forever changed the face of pop music with such songs as "Hard Day's Night", "Help", "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Sgt. Pepper", and "Revolution". Yesterday recreates note for note the music of the Fab Four.

Based in Las Vegas, Yesterday show bands have performed the long running show in among others, Atlantic City at the Tropicana Casino Resort for three years, at the Horizon Casino Hotel in Lake Tahoe for eight months, five months in the Tiffany Theater at the Tropicana in Las Vegas and hundreds of venues across the US.

Long Ago's And World's Apart - A Tribute to Small Faces (Re-Post)

Long Ago's And World's Apart - A Tribute to Small Faces - 1996

Review by Complete Modness, Select Magazine, september 1996
As Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones has often remarked, the story of the matching mod quartet is one of immense tragedy. Stitched up by unscrupulous management, frontman Steve Marriott left in 1968 at the height of their fame, and neither he nor the Faces that followed recaptured the original magic. When Ronnie Lane was already too ill with multiple sclerosis to take part, an ill-judged '70s reunion involved the tall bassist from Foreigner. Marriott died in a house fire in 1991, and with Lane struggling to pay Texan medical bills, the breezy stylishness of Itchycoo Park seems far away.Hence this well-timed tribute album to help out the ailing Plonk, and contrary to the usual grimness of tribute albums, there's much to recommend it. Mataray's I've Got Mine threatens like The Who at their most paranoid, while the 60ft Dolls turn The Universal into woozy, country-style pub rock - just like Steve would have wanted - before going all hallucinogenic courtesy of guest axeman Martin Carr. Even better, PP Arnold (backing vocalist on Tin Soldier in 1968, continuity fans) and Primal Scream make b-side track Understanding into a loose slice of Tamla stampage, with her voice closer to Marriott's r n b shout than any OCS groin-straining or Nigel Dodgy yelps. A Gallagher should be on here, you suspect, but Weller's instrumental Home Grown gives the guvnor's stamp of approval. If there's occasional lapses into Stars in their Eyes over-faithfulness (Gene, Whiteout), be thankful the threatened Blur cover of Lazy Sunday never made it. Pawning the one-off nature of the band's white soul heyday, none of these solid covers really improve on the originals but as a demonstration of continuing affection and esteem for the East End modfathers, it's strangely heartwarming. You'd think Ronnie's well-off '60s chums could have rallied round more. But in sober retrospect, a nostalgic showcase would have stymied the top mod spirit of a band who never had a chance to spoil their own legend.

Various Artists - Who's Not Forgotten: FDR's Tribute to The Who

Various Artists - Who's Not Forgotten: FDR's Tribute to The Who - 2004

By Erick Mertz from COSMIK.COM

When Robert Pollard takes the stage for his final encore as front man of Guided By Voices, he almost certainly announces a cover of "Baba O'Reilly" as the next song; as the guitars cascade, simulating the unforgettable signature keyboard line, he proclaims that this is the "greatest rock song ever written." The crowd screams, he kicks like Bruce Lee amid his own drunken miasma and the venue, however large, begins to pulse with an anticipation not seen during a night of originals to that point. It is more than lore that GBV is one of the best live acts in America, but in that moment, it is the Who that draw the ire and frothing joy from the crowd.

Precisely that riotous effect makes up the thrust behind H.E.A.R's (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers) compilation of Who cover songs. The artists are contemporary, some definitely obscure, and hand picked from labels Jam and Face Down records. It would belie Roger Daltry's wishes from The Kids Are Alright to analyze or scrutinize too deeply the choices of artists and their performances, but a few from among the 21 songs deserve mention, the first of which would naturally be Guided By Voices doing "Baba" live. Nothing short of transferring the listener to the surely dark and sweaty club where this was culled could top their rendition. As intended, it saps every stirring ounce of life from its listener and whether it is Roger or Robert singing, it isn't hyperbole to theorize that Baba's conception is a moment of rock genius. The Lola's kick over an anthemic version of "The Kids Are Alright" with a breezy summer day's enthusiasm as do The Commons whose rendition of the thinly veiled sex classic "Squeeze Box" is amazing.

Arguably, not every one of the Who's staple songs are covered (Tommy and Happy Jack glaring in their omission) and not every version is delightful (boring are "Behind Blue Eyes" and "I Can See For Miles"), but there is a lot of ground covered in one tribute. As Guided By Voices prove night in and night out, there is something indescribable about the Who, and when the Glowfriends give over their terrific, energetic rendition of "I Can't Explain" that magic is transferred, a little sadly perhaps, but with full riotous effect nonetheless.

The Kinx - A Tribute to The Kinks

The Kinx - A Tribute toThe Kinks - 2009

Review from TributeBandReviews

Kinks tribute band (The Kinx) first got together in 2007, the first year was dedicated almost entirely to re-recording the Kinks songs. They examined the music of The Kinks in the finest detail so as to re-create it in a recording made some 40 odd years later. The instruments used, who played which part using a particular type of amplifier, the dissection of each drum fill and the intricacies of the vocal arrangements were all pulled apart and put back together again. This process lasted some 13 months.

The band emerged at the end of this long recording project with their minds still intact and went on the road. All of the musicians in The Kinx are seasoned professionals when it comes to performing live in previous guises. The band has already received fantastic responses, not least at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club on the bill with The Undertakers and The Mojos. The Kinx have since been booked to perform 60′s shows with Liverpool Legends Gerry & The Pacemakers.

Let’s not forget that The Kinks along with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who were the ‘big 4′, the original ‘Britpop’ bands that defined a whole new musical generation back in the early sixties.

Now you can revisit those heady days when the world was changing so quickly from the austere times of the previous decade. Hair was growing longer, skirts were getting shorter, shirts were getting louder and pirate radio ruled the airwaves. The Kinx aim to make you smile when you remember those fantastic times. Tight 3 part harmonies and musicianship of the highest standard have combined to bring those fabulous Kinks songs from the swinging sixties back to life.

Attention to detail is paramount, authentic instruments and amplification is matched with a modern day state of the art sound system to deliver a truly magical musical experience. Attention has also been paid to the image, authentic 60′s Mod clothing as worn by the band, drainpipes and Chelsea boots, paisley shirts with penny drop collars and double cuffs – real Mod style for the iconic Kinks generation.

Denny Laine - A Tribute to Paul McCartney & Wings

Denny Laine - A Tribute to Paul McCartney & Wings - 1998

This collection is Denny's way of remembering the halcyon days when Wings' wings were spread the furthest; his chance to revisit the songs with which he conquered the world, and reacquaint himself, too. With some old friends - both Paul and Linda McCartney appear here, as Denny opens the archive and retrieves one of the band's most treasured out-takes. And while the album itself is a tribute to Paul, it is also a memorial to Linda, whose death in April 1998, hit all who knew her so hard.
