SEPTEMBER 2006 PRESS RELEASE
Fusion CI Studios continues to make leading-edge strides in Hollywood’s highly competitive world of visual effects. When the action film, The Guardian (starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher) is released on Friday, September 29th, movie goers will see daring sea rescues amidst heaving seas with Coast Guard helicopters crashing and ships floundering through giant ocean waves, spewing ocean-spray high into stormy skies. What they won’t see is that most of that water came from Vancouver…..well, virtually.
What started as a ‘trickle’ in Poseidon has become a virtual tidal wave with The Guardian. Mark Stasiuk, co-founder of Vancouver’s Fusion CI Studios, supervised a fluid fx team at CIS Hollywood to create the computer-generated wall of water in Poseidon that crashed through the ship’s corridor sweeping Jacinda Barrett away in one fell swoosh! In The Guardian, Stasiuk heads-up a fluid fx team at principle vfx studio, Flash Film Works (Hollywood), to create dozens of challenging fluid fx shots that transformed real ocean surface shots into stormy action on the high seas. The result has been spectacular, realistic-looking computer generated effects.
Using off-the-shelf software (RealFlow 4) by Spanish software company Next Limit Technologies, Stasiuk and his fluid fx team at Flash Film Works created outstandingly stormy ocean waves, boat bow sprays and boat wakes, enhancing reality exponentially. Some of the shots of cargo ships plowing through huge ocean waves are entirely CGI (computer generated imagery).
The greatest accomplishment of all, for visual effects technology, is that this triumph was achieved using software available to anyone! The difference between most of the virtual water shots in Poseidon and the virtual water in The Guardian, is that major studios with deep pockets like ILM spent years with a team of Stanford scientists creating their own in-house software to generate the wave that capsized Poseidon, or the water that crashed through the windows in the dining hall -- quite an achievement for ILM, but one that does not benefit anyone else in the vfx world.
But Next Limit is revolutionizing fluid fx. Now is that any accomplished visual effects studio can use this off-the-shelf software to create amazingly realistic fluid fx….. with Fusion’s scientific expertise of course! Stasiuk’s PhD in fluid dynamics no doubt helps him recreate the physical movements of water and his physics acumen allows him to devise customized formulas to make the software do practically anything he wants. And it is this custom scripting that has made RealFlow the high-end production tool it is today.
In a unique international business relationship, Vancouver’s Stasiuk worked in r&d; with the Spanish software developer Next Limit while using RealFlow in commercials and features like Poseidon and The Guardian. The feedback from these productions accelerated the development of the software into an easily accessible, high-end production tool. “The developments in the software during the past year have been phenomenal. Certainly RealFlow 4 has helped level the playing field in fluid fx.” says Stasiuk.
“Real-looking fluid fx are still among the most difficult and most sought after computer generated effect,” says Stasiuk. “VFX studios can work for months and months trying to develop their own in-house fluid solution and still not achieve realistic looking fluid fx. RealFlow provides an excellent foundation to then quickly build what you want, by adding customized scripting. The results can be phenomenal. Just look at what we’ve done on The Guardian!”
Amidst a ‘sea’ of Hollywood vfx companies now settling in Vancouver, it’s great to see home-grown Vancouver talent as a world leader in some of the most difficult visual effects to create – fluid fx. Co-founded by Mark Stasiuk and Lauren Millar, fluid fx studio, Fusion CIS (Computer Imagery Studios) is based in Vancouver with a studio in LA.

The Guardian (2006 film)
The Guardian (aka The Guardsman) is a 2006 action-adventure drama film directed by Andrew Davis. The film stars Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher and Melissa Sagemiller. The film's title is introduced by a mythic tale: people lost at sea often claim they feel a presence lifting them to the surface, breathing life into their bodies while they are waiting for help to arrive. They call this presence "The Guardian". The setting for the film is the United States Coast Guard and their Aviation Survival Technician (AST) program. The Guardian was released on September 29, 2006.
Plot
Ben Randall (Kevin Costner), the top rescue swimmer at the United States Coast Guard's Aviation Survival Technician (AST) program. Due to his frequent time at work, Ben's wife, requests a separation. When on a rescue, he loses his rescue team in an HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crash at sea. While waiting in a survival raft, his best friend, Chief Petty Officer Carl Billings (Omari Hardwick), dies. Shaken, Ben considers retiring but becomes an instructor at a Coast Guard training school.

Creating interactive work that forms a connection and resonates is often about the unseen; the bits in between, the invisible moments that take something from good to great and help build a relationship, however fleeting or transient. As our ordinary everyday sees us surrounded by more and more opportunities to interact, now more than ever we need to uncover the unseen to create interactive experiences that aren't made for the logical, ones and zeros paradigm of machines but for the illogical and beautiful nature of people. In this session Brendan will take you through what he believes to be the "grammar of interaction design"; a continually growing manifesto of beliefs and observations that he and the team at magneticNorth use everyday to help create magical things. Brendan Dawes is Creative Director for magneticNorth, an interactive design company based in Manchester, UK. Over the years he's helped to realize projects for a wide range of brands including Sony Records, Diesel, BBC, Fox Kids, Channel 4, Disney, Benetton, Kellogg's, The Tate and Coca-Cola. Ever since his first experiences with the humble ZX81 back in the early eighties, Brendan has continued to explore the interplay of people, code, design and art both in his role leading the team at mN (mnatwork.com) and on brendandawes.com, a personal space where he publishes random thoughts, toys and projects created from an eclectic mix of digital and analog objects. In 2009 he was listed among the top twenty web designers in the world by .Net magazine and was featured in the "Design Icon" series in Computer Arts. Three of Brendan's most famous pieces of work are born from his on-going love affair with film. The Webby nominated "Psycho Studio", created in 1998, was one of the very first video editors created in Flash and allowed people to re-cut their own version of the infamous shower scene from Psycho. "Saul Bass on the Web" is an online homage to the father of film titles, the graphic design legend Saul Bass. "Cinema Redux" attempts to distill whole movies down to a single image using specially written software that samples a single frame of a movie every second. The Museum of Modern Art in New York featured Cinema Redux as part of "Design and the Elastic Mind" and later acquired two pieces for the permanent MoMA collection. Brendan’s work has been featured in numerous journals including idN, Creative Review, MacUser, Computer Arts, Create, Wired, Eye, The Guardian, The Times, Communications Arts and was interviewed by Computer Arts in December 2008 for their "Design Icon" series. Dog Guardian Angel
Since 2006, Lori Weise of Downtown Dog Rescue has been running free spay/neuter dog clinics in Compton’s East Rancho Dominguez Park. On the second Saturday of each month, about 35 dogs who have appointments are fixed, vaccinated and microchipped. Lori created this program specifically for Compton after hearing about the many strays in the area. She also learned that many locals want to have their dogs fixed, but they simply can’t afford it, or do not have transportation to a clinic outside the neighborhood. Each dog that comes in costs about $100; Lori has support from the Heigl Foundation, PetSmart and private donations to hire the AngelDogs Foundation’s mobile spay/neuter vehicle. Fusion CI Studios continues to make leading-edge strides in Hollywood’s highly competitive world of visual effects. When the action film, The Guardian (starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher) is released on Friday, September 29th, movie goers will see daring sea rescues amidst heaving seas with Coast Guard helicopters crashing and ships floundering through giant ocean waves, spewing ocean-spray high into stormy skies. What they won’t see is that most of that water came from Vancouver…..well, virtually.
What started as a ‘trickle’ in Poseidon has become a virtual tidal wave with The Guardian. Mark Stasiuk, co-founder of Vancouver’s Fusion CI Studios, supervised a fluid fx team at CIS Hollywood to create the computer-generated wall of water in Poseidon that crashed through the ship’s corridor sweeping Jacinda Barrett away in one fell swoosh! In The Guardian, Stasiuk heads-up a fluid fx team at principle vfx studio, Flash Film Works (Hollywood), to create dozens of challenging fluid fx shots that transformed real ocean surface shots into stormy action on the high seas. The result has been spectacular, realistic-looking computer generated effects.
Using off-the-shelf software (RealFlow 4) by Spanish software company Next Limit Technologies, Stasiuk and his fluid fx team at Flash Film Works created outstandingly stormy ocean waves, boat bow sprays and boat wakes, enhancing reality exponentially. Some of the shots of cargo ships plowing through huge ocean waves are entirely CGI (computer generated imagery).
The greatest accomplishment of all, for visual effects technology, is that this triumph was achieved using software available to anyone! The difference between most of the virtual water shots in Poseidon and the virtual water in The Guardian, is that major studios with deep pockets like ILM spent years with a team of Stanford scientists creating their own in-house software to generate the wave that capsized Poseidon, or the water that crashed through the windows in the dining hall -- quite an achievement for ILM, but one that does not benefit anyone else in the vfx world.
But Next Limit is revolutionizing fluid fx. Now is that any accomplished visual effects studio can use this off-the-shelf software to create amazingly realistic fluid fx….. with Fusion’s scientific expertise of course! Stasiuk’s PhD in fluid dynamics no doubt helps him recreate the physical movements of water and his physics acumen allows him to devise customized formulas to make the software do practically anything he wants. And it is this custom scripting that has made RealFlow the high-end production tool it is today.
In a unique international business relationship, Vancouver’s Stasiuk worked in r&d; with the Spanish software developer Next Limit while using RealFlow in commercials and features like Poseidon and The Guardian. The feedback from these productions accelerated the development of the software into an easily accessible, high-end production tool. “The developments in the software during the past year have been phenomenal. Certainly RealFlow 4 has helped level the playing field in fluid fx.” says Stasiuk.
“Real-looking fluid fx are still among the most difficult and most sought after computer generated effect,” says Stasiuk. “VFX studios can work for months and months trying to develop their own in-house fluid solution and still not achieve realistic looking fluid fx. RealFlow provides an excellent foundation to then quickly build what you want, by adding customized scripting. The results can be phenomenal. Just look at what we’ve done on The Guardian!”

Great interaction design is not about technology. Creating interactive work that forms a connection and resonates is often about the unseen; the bits in between, the invisible moments that take something from good to great and help build a relationship, however fleeting or transient. As our ordinary everyday sees us surrounded by more and more opportunities to interact, now more than ever we need to uncover the unseen to create interactive experiences that aren't made for the logical, ones and zeros paradigm of machines but for the illogical and beautiful nature of people. In this session Brendan will take you through what he believes to be the "grammar of interaction design"; a continually growing manifesto of beliefs and observations that he and the team at magneticNorth use everyday to help create magical things.
Brendan Dawes is Creative Director for magneticNorth, an interactive design company based in Manchester, UK. Over the years he's helped to realize projects for a wide range of brands including Sony Records, Diesel, BBC, Fox Kids, Channel 4, Disney, Benetton, Kellogg's, The Tate and Coca-Cola.
Ever since his first experiences with the humble ZX81 back in the early eighties, Brendan has continued to explore the interplay of people, code, design and art both in his role leading the team at mN (mnatwork.com) and on brendandawes.com, a personal space where he publishes random thoughts, toys and projects created from an eclectic mix of digital and analog objects. In 2009 he was listed among the top twenty web designers in the world by .Net magazine and was featured in the "Design Icon" series in Computer Arts.
Three of Brendan's most famous pieces of work are born from his on-going love affair with film. The Webby nominated "Psycho Studio", created in 1998, was one of the very first video editors created in Flash and allowed people to re-cut their own version of the infamous shower scene from Psycho. "Saul Bass on the Web" is an online homage to the father of film titles, the graphic design legend Saul Bass. "Cinema Redux" attempts to distill whole movies down to a single image using specially written software that samples a single frame of a movie every second. The Museum of Modern Art in New York featured Cinema Redux as part of "Design and the Elastic Mind" and later acquired two pieces for the permanent MoMA collection.
Brendan’s work has been featured in numerous journals including idN, Creative Review, MacUser, Computer Arts, Create, Wired, Eye, The Guardian, The Times, Communications Arts and was interviewed by Computer Arts in December 2008 for their "Design Icon" series. Great interaction design is not about technology. Creating interactive work that forms a connection and resonates is often about the unseen; the bits in between, the invisible moments that take something from good to great and help build a relationship, however fleeting or transient. As our ordinary everyday sees us surrounded by more and more opportunities to interact, now more than ever we need to uncover the unseen to create interactive experiences that aren't made for the logical, ones and zeros paradigm of machines but for the illogical and beautiful nature of people. In this session Brendan will take you through what he believes to be the "grammar of interaction design"; a continually growing manifesto of beliefs and observations that he and the team at magneticNorth use everyday to help create magical things.
Brendan Dawes is Creative Director for magneticNorth, an interactive design company based in Manchester, UK. Over the years he's helped to realize projects for a wide range of brands including Sony Records, Diesel, BBC, Fox Kids, Channel 4, Disney, Benetton, Kellogg's, The Tate and Coca-Cola.
Ever since his first experiences with the humble ZX81 back in the early eighties, Brendan has continued to explore the interplay of people, code, design and art both in his role leading the team at mN (mnatwork.com) and on brendandawes.com, a personal space where he publishes random thoughts, toys and projects created from an eclectic mix of digital and analog objects. In 2009 he was listed among the top twenty web designers in the world by .Net magazine and was featured in the "Design Icon" series in Computer Arts.
Three of Brendan's most famous pieces of work are born from his on-going love affair with film. The Webby nominated "Psycho Studio", created in 1998, was one of the very first video editors created in Flash and allowed people to re-cut their own version of the infamous shower scene from Psycho. "Saul Bass on the Web" is an online homage to the father of film titles, the graphic design legend Saul Bass. "Cinema Redux" attempts to distill whole movies down to a single image using specially written software that samples a single frame of a movie every second. The Museum of Modern Art in New York featured Cinema Redux as part of "Design and the Elastic Mind" and later acquired two pieces for the permanent MoMA collection.

'For decades, we assumed that the components of such complex systems as the cell, the society, or the Internet are randomly wired together. In the past decade, an avalanche of research has shown that many real networks, independent of their age, function, and scope, converge to similar architectures, a universality that allowed researchers from different disciplines to embrace network theory as a common paradigm.'
Steven Johnson, author of Where Good Ideas Come From, writes about recurring patterns and liquid networks:
“Coral reefs are sometimes called “the cities of the sea”, and part of the argument is that we need to take the metaphor seriously: the reef ecosystem is so innovative because it shares some defining characteristics with actual cities. These patterns of innovation and creativity are fractal: they reappear in recognizable form as you zoom in and out, from molecule to neuron to pixel to sidewalk. Whether you’re looking at original innovations of carbon-based life, or the explosion of news tools on the web, the same shapes keep turning up... when life gets creative, it has a tendency to gravitate toward certain recurring patterns, whether those patterns are self-organizing, or whether they are deliberately crafted by human agents”
Patrick Pittman from Dumbo Feather adds:
“Put simply: cities are like ant colonies are like software is like slime molds are like evolution is like disease is like sewage systems are like poetry is like the neural pathways in our brain. Everything is connected.
"...Johnson uses ‘The Long Zoom’ to define the way he looks at the world—if you concentrate on any one level, there are patterns that you miss. Author Paul Stammetts writes about The Mycelial Archetype: He compares the mushroom mycelium with the overlapping information-sharing systems that comprise the Internet, with the networked neurons in the brain, and with a computer model of dark matter in the universe. All share this densely intertwingled filamental structure.
An article in Reality Sandwich called Google a psychedelically informed superpowered network, a manifestation of the mycelial archetype:
“Recognizing this super-connectivity and conductivity is often accompanied by blissful mindbody states and the cognitive ecstasy of multiple "aha's!" when the patterns in the mycelium are revealed. That Googling that has become a prime noetic technology (How can we recognize a pattern and connect more and more, faster and faster?: superconnectivity and superconductivity) mirrors the increased speed of connection of thought-forms from cannabis highs on up. Since 2006, Lori Weise of Downtown Dog Rescue has been running free spay/neuter dog clinics in Compton’s East Rancho Dominguez Park. On the second Saturday of each month, about 35 dogs who have appointments are fixed, vaccinated and microchipped.
Lori created this program specifically for Compton after hearing about the many strays in the area. She also learned that many locals want to have their dogs fixed, but they simply can’t afford it, or do not have transportation to a clinic outside the neighborhood. Each dog that comes in costs about $100; Lori has support from the Heigl Foundation, PetSmart and private donations to hire the AngelDogs Foundation’s mobile spay/neuter vehicle.

Since their eponymous debut, Fleet Foxes’ inimitable blend of pastoral harmonies with vivid lyricism and gentle baroque instrumentation has clearly demonstrated the band’s ability to captivate a widespread audience. Tonight, the band brings their modern folk ballads to the Austin City Limits stage for their first appearance on the show.
The Seattle quintet formed in 2006 through friendship and a mutual appreciation of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Shortly after, Fleet Foxes released their first demo, the self- released Fleet Foxes EP, and quickly acquired growing popularity on their local circuit. The band had attracted over a quarter million song plays on their MySpace purely by word of mouth by the end of 2007, which soon translated into a record deal with Sub Pop Records. By 2008, the band’s self-titled debut album achieved tremendous success from fans and music critics alike and became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2008. Rolling Stone included the album in their list of 100 Best Albums of the 2000s, while The Guardian described it to be “a landmark in American music, an instant classic.”
With the release of their newest album, Helplessness Blues, in May of this year, the band’s rise to prominence has yet to stall. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Robin Pecknold said he had intended for the album to sound “less poppy, less upbeat and more groove-based.” Focused more on cohesion and all- in-one-take recordings reminiscent of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, the album’s slight departure from their signature sound has proven to entice audiences even further. Already ranking on several Best of 2011 lists, Helplessness Blues resonates with “sophisticated, truth- seeking songs that make it feel as timeless and immortal” (The AV Club).

French photojournalist Veronique de Viguerie discusses some of her iconic work on the pirates of Somalia and what it is like working as a female photojournalist in Muslim countries – including photographing the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Viguerie provides an insight to her career, discusses some of her iconic and unique work on the pirates of Somalia, what it is like working as a woman photojournalists in Muslim countries - including photographing the Taliban in Afghanistan - and tells us about one of her most memorable assignments.
Veronique de Viguerie (born 1978) is a French photographer based in Paris. Having completed a master’s degree in law, she travelled to England to study photojournalism. She spent 3 years living and working in Afghanistan, and since 2006 has been covering stories around the world, including in Iraq, Lebanon, Somalia, India, Bangladesh, Israel, Kashmir, Cameroon, Algeria, Guatemala, etc. She bravely takes on these challenging assignments and personal projects in some of the most dangerous places on the planet, often working with her French journalist friend and colleague Manon Querouil.
Veronique’s work is regularly published in Newsweek, the New York Times, Stern, Paris Match, GEO, Figaro magazine, Marie Claire, The Guardian, La Repubblica, and has been printed in countless other titles.
In 2006 she won the Canon prize for the Female Photojournalist of the Year, the Lagardere Grant for Young Talent, and released her first book about Afghanistan: “Regards Croises”, published by Hachette.
In summer 2008 Veronique shot a cover story for Paris Match in Afghanistan attracting international attention, on a group of Taliban militants who had ambushed and killed French troops. She followed that up a few months later with a feature on the pirates in Somalia, completed just as the topic began to make the headlines around the world. The completed pirate project has subsequently been published in over 40 titles around the world, in over 20 countries.
Since then her work has included coverage of oil piracy in Nigeria, social issues in Afghanistan, women’s rights group FEMEN, the hunt for the LRA and the Great Lakes region of Africa (for which HBO featured her for an episode of their series ‘Witness’), mass grave forensic work in Abkhazia, and recently landmines in the Balkans.

Future-gazer, media activist, collaborator and thinker, Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century. He stretched the idea of what art could be and what making art could be like. Working across the disciplines of experimental music, performance, TV, video and sculpture, Paik's career reflects the development of a set of counter-culture ideas that are central to artists working with technology today.
Open Transmission is part of two-venue exhibition starting at Tate Liverpool and ending here at FACT. The first major retrospective of the artist's work since his death, it offers a rare opportunity to experience some of Paik's most innovative video works, installations and sculptures.
At FACT we present the UK premiere of Laser Cone, a spectacular installation that invites visitors to experience the fascinating powers of lasers, which the artist thought to be 'mystical'.
FACT also brings together an archive of Paik's experimentations with new media, TV and satellite broadcast work, all of which illustrate Paik's belief that global communication could promote deeper understanding across different cultures and societies.
To celebrate Nam June Paik's remarkable influence across the world, FACT has invited artists to produce performances, projects, events and new artworks that connect with the artist's legacy.

Ben Hammersley, Editor at Large of WIRED magazine, is a journalist, broadcaster, photographer, and technologist. Ben is also Head of Digital for SIX Creative. He is a freelance reporter for the BBC and previously worked as the first internet reporter for The Times, where he was shortlisted for one of the British Press Awards. He has also worked as a reporter for the Guardian and UK arm of MSN. In 2006, Hammersley was embedded with both British and American troops in Afghanistan, shooting video for The Guardian as a multimedia reporter for Guardian Unlimited.
